I know that this may have already come up, but I still find it useful.  Especially when you can't scout a property well enough or its a new piece of public land that someone just told you about.

I'm a map junkie and I always carry a compass with me.  LandNav is not as important as it once was with GPS, but what will you do if you lose it or the battery runs out?

I am a map guy myself as some places I want to hunt may be 10 miles from any road.
anyway forget USGS and go to my top.com and build your own map.
the cost is almost the same and your map is totally customized for your ares.
Now all my maps are waterproof and my hunting areas are centered.
check it out.

I use the "Topo Maps" iPhone app.  Never carry a standalone GPS anymore.
