I just signed in and posted on the new member page.  I need some advice and have a question or two. I have a blind set up in the hedge row between two fields where I have seen a lot of turkeys. This past Saturday, a week before the season opens, I went out 45 mins. before sunrise and scouted my set up. After settling in I made a few yelp calls, waiting about 5 minutes and hit the calls again. I heard a gobbler call out and I waited a while then yelped back. This went on for about 5-10 mins and I heard the Tom had move closer. I then hear another Tom gobble in the distance behind me a ways away. Both birds were getting closer, when the first bird I heard walked about 50 yards in front of my blind and started strutting. Several hens had flown down and were scattered about. The Tom then started towards the other Tom I had heard and they went to fighting like crazy, it sounded like two plastic trash can lids being beat together. They kept at it and were about 120 yards away from me before they wandered into the woods still fighting. Any advice on how to get either Tom to move closer into my range, I called when the first Tom was close, he looked up at me, then kept on his collision course with his rival. I never did see either Tom engage with any of the hens. I am going back opening day and hope I can get the bird in range.

Just keep at it and be patient ,try not to over call, and do you remember where they left the field at ?
When I'm scouting Fields to hunt I like to watch where they enter and exit the fields and try to position myself at one or the other.

Thanks, the first Tom entered from my right into the field in front of me. There was a bid cedar tree blocking my view and I didn't see exactly where he came in. The other turkey approached from 150 yds about 11:OO O'clock from my view facing the open field. I am using an old Remington model 1140 2-3/4" shotgun with a polychoke set on full shooting #4 lead shot, what do you think is the effective maximum range for me. I am going to mark off a few spots in the field to know my range.

Set you up a target at about 30 yards and make sure your gun is hitting true to aim
and you should be ok ,if its on you might want to try some 5 and 6 shot shells to see what your gun like best .

Thank you for your feedback. I really do need to "scope in" my shot gun (not scoped, but it's what I do with rifles) I have access to an old Winchester pump 3" chambered with a full choke 32" barrel. It's deadly at turkey shoots on targets, I need to find out where it is as it was my grand dad's and one of my brothers probably has it. It was nicknamed "LongTom", fitting for a turkey gun I'd say.
