Does anyone know what the minimun legal length is for a hunting shotgun barrel is? I have heard anywhere from 16 to 20 inchs. And does it vary from state to state? Thanks Sam

Federal law requires a rifle have a barrel greater than 16" and a shotgun have a barrel greater than 18 inches without special registration.  There are further limits on overall gun length.  I am unsure if there are states that impose restrictions stricter than the Federal law.  It is common on shotguns to make the barrel 18 1/2" to prevent issues of measurement.

Federal law:  Shotguns:  18" barrel and an overall length of 26" with any stock type either foldable, collapsible fully extended, or fixed position stocks .  Rifles are 16" min bbl length and same overall length...of course there are states with more restrictive laws than the feds.  Cali is def one that is much more restrictive!  Lousy liberals.

Once upon a time I was dating this girl and one of her friends' boyfriend got  pulled over for a minor traffic stop and police decided to search his car and found a cutdown double barrel in his trunk. It was just shy of the 18" and think he ended up getting  2 years, with no priors. I believe it was because there are mandatory sentencing guidelines for fed firearm violations? Don't remember all the details now, it was looong ago, I do remember it scaring the bejesus out of me and me measuring my slug gun barrel about 100 times, lol!

Tax stamp ($200) and a bit of a wait, you can make it what ever length you want. (well, what ever length you put on the form 1) You can do an addendum with addition barrel lengths, caliber, over all length. I have not done a Shotgun yet, but I do have a SBR and 2 suppressors. If you go the trust route you can now efile and the wait time is 3-4 months like it use to be. Mailing is about 11-12 months. Follow the law, exact dont be afraid to call the atf and ask to speak to your states examiner for clarification of any thing you dont understand. And of coarse this is all irrelevant if your state doesnt allow NFA items. Suppressors, short barrel shotguns/rifles, machine guns etc etc...

18inches , be advised there may be local/ state regulations

Be very wary of the BATF / ATF the mandatory regulations are serious many of them are 5 years , federal pen time

I have a customer on my route , ex husband ....on the net selling services related to fully automatic modifications .......Bam , 5 years ".......

Short barreled shotguns , suppressors , modifying a rifle to shoot auto , straw purchases - all these things will land you in a world of hurt

Also....if your a convicted felon , and you have not had your FULL civil rights restored , being within a area where there is ammunition or modern firearms can get you thrown right back in the can - and that in most jurisdictions has mandatory sentencing guidelines

All these rules have a hand In why many years ago we had to prohibit firearms ffl transactions here at oldgobbler , who is to say you are not selling a firearm to a felon , or a BATF agent? ....... Or you won't get slipped a counterfeit check - the price point of firearms is just not formated for a turkey hunting site --  that's why there are places like gunbroker to provide that service

Thanks guys, I figured it was 18 inches. May have it cut down to 20 inches just to keep me out of the can. I wonder if they include the choke tube in the lenght since some of the ported ones stick out a bit?
