Slate ?

Should it have a gritty feeling when playing? I have cleaned off with a achohol wipe and used a green scotch bright after cleaning.

Yes... it will sometimes feel a bit gritty.  Personally I wouldn't use and alcohol wipe on a slate (others may feel different).  I just condition with a scotch brite blow it off and run it.

Do you clean striker as well?  That may have the grit on it

^^^ this. I only use a alcohol wipe on copper.
