He is making his gun money, does fine with your 12.
Got to agree with OG, Take him to the gun shop.
Let him try some 12 and 20's and let him decide.
Sounds like a fine young man and good luck to ya all this spring.

My take is when it come to availability of turkey loads a 12 ga. is most always easier to find and at a better selection.  Yeah you can do some awesome things with a 20 but when you apply the same things to even a 3" 12 it's just that much more awesome.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

As far as turkey hunting is concerned a 20 will do anything a 12 will do.If he wants a 20 then get him a 20.If he feels later on that he needs a 12 then get it.

I would be worried about him developing a flinch with a twelve

For reasons stated above, don't rush the 12 ga.
He'll be bigger and heavier in a couple or three years and can handle the increased recoil better.
Introducing it too early may cause flinch or bad habits dealing with heavier recoil before his body is big enough to take it well.

if it's where he can,let him try out several different models before he buys one

If you're still looking for a semi auto, the Winchester SX3 I believe has a self adjusting gas system.

Then you have the Inertia guns. The high dollar Benellis and the. The mid to low price Stoegers. The Stoegers have the M2000 and 3000, both 3 inch guns, the M3500 is a 3 1/2 inch gun, and they have a new model in 20 gauge the M3020

Let him shoot the 20 for awhile yet, they'll kill, no problem. He sounds like a good boy wanting to help dad out and saving his cash,(like I did). In a few years, he'll have more Bens to cash in on that Benelli. I shoot the 12 ga M2 topped with a Bushnell 1.75 to 4, Carlson choke, only ever use 3" 5s, it's a killing machine.

My dad bought me a 20ga. for my first shotgun at age 11 and I wanted a 12ga. within the first year.  I hit so much better when I got my 12 ga. and so had a lot more fun. We mostly hunted birds and I don't remember noticing the recoil when shooting at game. My dad often said he wished he would have just got the 12ga. for me from the start. I was a fairly big kid though. Whatever you get him he is blessed to have a dad that spends time hunting with him. My dad is gone now but I still remember every hunting trip we ever took.
