Has anyone ever had any dealings with customsawing.com? I was interested in buying the stuff off of them to make a slate call. Their prices don't seem too bad.

What would be your favorite wood, calling surface, and sound board combination? And is there anything I could do to the pot I get from them to tweak it if it could be made to sound better?

I've looked around a little more and I think I'll order from Brookside game calls. Anyone tried any of their pot call kits?

WildSpur

I never tried any of brookside kits but I did assemble 4 calls from their materials last year.

All had glass soundboards.  All were 3.5" pots.  I did a slate/lacewood,  a crystal/cherry,  a aluminum/birds eye maple, and a padauk/ceramic.   The padauk ceramic worked wonders last year.  It would get birds gobbling when nothing else would.

I was pretty happy with them.

I ordered from them around thanksgiving.  I made 2 calls, both sound good to me.  Good prices and shipped quick.  Can't complain.

Thanks for your input. I was also wondering, if I order a 3.5" pot what are the demensions of the other pieces? 3" soundboard and 3.5" slate?

WildSpur

Yep.  Get a 3" sound board for the 3.5" pot.  If you go with ceramic let them know you need the pot cut at 3.42".

I have ordered from Custom Sawing and they have good parts and really fast service. (2 or 3 days shipping)

I have ordered both pots and glass from them in the past. The pots, I liked, I think I got poplar. The glass wasn't quite as good a sound as I had hoped, but good prices and good to deal with.

I recently bought some pots and crystal from Brookside. Very much liked both.

Custom sawing is a great company to do business with. I used to buy surfaces from them years ago. I really liked their slate.

I don't build a pile of calls but the few pots I've built I've bought my slate and glass sound boards from CS.   I've had great service.  Mine sounded fine, I think sound is a combination of wood, thickness of the base, and sound board placement.   Finding that sweet spot is the fun part.   mine for some reason on the last batch came out quite loud, but I like it lol!

I won't hesitate to do business with them again when I'm out of pot material!

I do my own pots though and have 0 experience with their pots.   They've sent me a few test pots over the years, I think I still have them.  They look good, that said I like having control over the specs.  even if it bites me in the butt from time to time ;)

I have ordered from both places and have been very pleased with the quality of items I have received from either place. I think you get items shipped faster from CS and they have cedar pots which I like to use as well. Brookside has better prices and a wider selection of pots.

My favorite combos are 3.5inch pots; cedar pot glass over slate sound board, zebrawood pot glass over slate, and osage orange slate over glass.

Enjoy, very rewarding making your own combination. I am waiting on some pots and copper surfaces to arrive any day.
