I'm in the process of building my own gun.  I want to take a 870 express with laminate stocks and put a turkey barrel on it.  The 21" barrels seem to be hard to find.  I did find a 23" super mag barrel with 3 in chamber.  Will this fit any 870 express with 3 in chamber?  I want a turkey gun with a wood stock and forend that have all the characteristics of a turkey gun like a short barrel, rifled sights etc.  I don't need another turkey gun but just want a little project untill next spring.

If the barrel is from a super mag the barrel should have a 3.5" chamber.

I thought the samething but it says 3inch chamber on the website.

If it's says Supermagnum, then it's a 3.5" chamber.

That is probably a misprint... should be 3.5 on Super Mag barrel. The Super Mag will not fit the Rem. Express without modification according to what I read. If you have a Rem Express then order the Rem Express barrel. All other Remington 870 barrels are interchangeable.

I may be incorrect. Cheaper Than Dirt advertised Super Mag Barrels and they say they will fit all 870s and the chamber length was 3". I just purchased a Remington 870 SPS Super Mag Turkey gun and the manual says that the barrels are not interchangeable. Maybe it refers to SPS guns.

From another forum:

"The 870 SuperMag receiver will accept all other 870 barrels (except Special Field). Don't try to fire shells longer than the barrel is chambered for!

Check this out: http://www.remington.com/products/fi...mag-combo.aspx

SuperMag combo with with 3" chambered slug barrel.

Yes, there is an error in the owner's manual that contradicts this.

Yes, you can fire any length 12 gauge shell in the SuperMag."

I have a 21" barrel if you might be interested.  I bought it last year.

I called Remington and talked with one of their service reps and he said the barrel will fit all 870's. After asking him time and time again, he assured me it would work on a 870 express with 3 in chamber.   I ordered the barrel and received it today.  On the package it states, 2 3/4, 3, and 3 1/2 shells for super mag receivers.  2 3/4 and 3 for magnum receivers and 2 3/4 for 2 3/4 receivers.  It also states 870 wingmaster, 870 express and 870 special purpose. Its a new one on me. LOL.

I also have a replacement barel for an 870, I was told that it would fit any 870. Guess what the barrel ring is to small and wont let the barrel slip into reciever. So all 870 barrels are not interchangeable. If you think they are and remington told you that something is wrong somewhere. The earlier 870 twenty gauges were supposedly built on a 12 gauge frame. So if you get a interchangeable barrel like I did and your serial number on your shotgun ends in x it will not fit. $ 200.00 mistake on my part.

I've had the barrel on the gun for a couple of months now and getting some great patters with it.  I'm using a 665 Jellyhead with hevishot magblends.  It came with a 28"bbl and is stamped 2 3/4, 3, and 3 1/2.  The new barrel is stamped the same.  Where the barrel connects to the receiver is identical on both barrels. Below are 2 pictures of the shotgun after I changed the barrel.
