Fall turkey hunting tactic pointers you can share...

I never did get my first turkey this past spring. But, I had a load of action & fell in love with it.

I am planning on getting another tag for me & my kids for the fall hunt. Read a few articles on some tactics, but figured I'd come here for some more insight.

Read about the "scatter" tactic. That sounds very interesting. How has it worked for you all?

Any calls that might work on the gobblers in the fall. I think that the Kee Kee works in the fall? Has to be some other tactics for calls?

When possible, find the gobblers roosted. Play it just as you would a spring hunt. Many don't know they can harvest a Tom that gobbles and struts in the fall.

Often while archery hunting you may hear birds flying up. Listen for the heaviest winged birds. Spend enough time with them and you may be able to tell which are most likely Toms'.

Breaking the flock works well. Break a flock of toms' and talk tom to them gently, they will often run in. I love fall gobbler hunting.

To find a fall flock, in dry weather, slowly roam in the known hangouts until you hear them scratching. If it sounds like a troop of boy scouts walking, you probably found them.

I carry a fall tag every year.Just in case. I am a deer hunter in the fall but will take a turkey if given the chance. The only advice I can give is to get good with the kee kee. I have called them in doing the kee kee but never sealed the deal.I don't think you need to scatter them for it to work.Just start calling and keep your eyes open. They will answer back.Especially the hens.

Do the fall turkeys roost in the same general area as they did in the spring?
Will they fly down into a soybean field before they are harvested? Standing corn?
Will the long beards shock gobble?

Probably silly questions but I am getting ready for fall!

Turkey needs change in the fall so don't plan on them being in the same spot they were in in the spring.. Scout and look at the sign. If your state lets you shoot eather sex, shoot a hen. Fall turkey hunting is a blast. Call a lot and have fun. Don't get caught up in the I need to kill a longbeard mentality. Longbeards are a whole different animal in the fall.

Learn and understand your quarry. Turkeys live in flocks during the fall. Gobblers hang with gobblers, hens and poults hang with each other, sometimes Jakes will have their own flock late in the fall. If you understand these dynamics you will have a better idea of how to hunt them. Scatter is a good method if you are hunting hens and poults because they really want to be together. It's not a real great method if your hunting gobblers because they might get together and they might not. Turkeys are very inquisitive. I like to just call first and see if they want to play. Sometimes young birds of the fall want to see the new guy on the block and when a few start coming usually everybody follows. Finding the turkeys is going to be the hard part. Once you find them it usually gets fun. Good luck,

I've never scattered a flock.  I've cold called and had a little luck.  Scouting, like everything, scout.  When you find where they want/like to be just wait them out, that's how I've harvest pretty much all birds in the fall. I hunted with decoys last fall for the first time. Not sure if they didn't like the blind or decoys, but they seemed to skirt me.  That being said I did fill a tag on my 3rd sit doing that I think. May try to replicate a flock this fall instead of having just 2 decoys out.

a lot of times turkeys will head to where they are feeding right after roost maybe go there and wait them out good luck

great question with some great responses.  As much as I turkey hunt I have never hunted in the fall but our archery season opens on the 23rd of August and I plan on having my bow with me while I'm scouting elk and now I'll have a plan.
