I remember my first solo trip in 87'. I had hunted with seasoned hunters but never called in a bird on my own. Even though I knew what to do and had seen it done often, I couldn't believe it worked for me on my first solo kill! Once I started believing in my own ability to fool a turkey, my success rate soared. This is a great story and you did a great job! The situation with the birds showing up right after your gun down, or things not going according to plan is just part of hunting. Sounds like you were able to adjust on the fly and bag your bird. That is what will make the difference more often than not. You will do great on your own.

Cut N Run

Congratulations.  What county are you hunting?  I hunt in Durham, Orange, Warren, Granville, and Chatham.

Luck counts, good or bad.

Jim, I hunt in Fanklin and Bertie.  I harvested both these birds in Franklin.
