Has anybody ever had a tree fall close to them while in the woods. Today it was pretty windy at times. But anyways I just got done walking off a old logging road I was standing in a field trying to figure out what was wrong with a morning dove it couldn't fly or anything. Then I hear a hawk scream or whatever it does right behind me so I was sitting there looking at the hawk and all of a sudden this pretty decent size dead tree almost as big as 55 gallon drum barrel fell right were I walking ten minutes ago. That made me think of how lucky I am to be alive I think god was watching over me. If I would of stayed and called ten minutes longer that tree would of probably killed me. Needless to say I hunted in fields the rest of the day. Trees don't seem to like me today there was one across the road on my way there waited about ten minutes for some to come and cut it since it was on the highway. Then I said screw I ain't gonna miss first light and i drove over it somehow without getting high centered. For now on I'm gonna stick to the fields when its windy.

I was in a treestand in Northern Ontario ,bear hunting. the wind and rain started and a 12 in popple about 30 yards from me snapped in have and crashed to the ground. I looked at the 12 in.popple I was in and said to heck with this. I bailed out and headed for camp. When I walked in 30 minutes earlier it was dry as a bone. By the time I got top my truck I was slogging through mud puddles about a foot deep.

As a forestry professional I am constantly looking ahead when marking timber or walking through the woods. Yes, dead trees and broken limbs do fall and they are very dangerous. A windy day after a strong storm has moved through deserves special attention.

Any time you are looking for a spot to sit and call or to put up a stand for deer hunting take th etime to look carefully all around the area  before setting up.

Glsd to hear that you are OK. and a great safety reminder to us all.

Last year right before the rut kicked off I was set up in a ladder stand, it was calm, little or no wind and POP. A dead cherry about 18" diameter about ten yards away fell over so slowly. It missed me by about 15 feet. I trim trees for a living so I've had trees fall right in front if me and I've had some close calls but it's a little different when your not expecting it. It scared me half to death.

I was hunting on my fathers property about 30 years ago in my climber when this wind came out of nohwere had to be 40 mph. I was swaying 3 to 4 feet in that pine tree, widow makers were falling everywhere, scared me to death. lasted about 15 min and quit, got down went to dads cabin about a 1/4 mile told him about it he said no wind here, strange.

I actually thought about it this year as I was set up in a stand of dead timber, Turkey hunting. There was dead limbs all around me on the ground, and looking up at the ones hanging over me, it did make me nervous when the wind was blowing, and the whole stand of trees was creaking.

I've heard them fall quite a bit. Also quite scary!! :o
Also seen a few fall. Even scarier!!

I personally don't like being in the woods when its windy. If I am I scope out the area for any widow makers and stay put.

It crossed my mind when I was sitting by a fallen cottonwood in KS this spring with 40mph winds banging the standing trees over my head. :-\
Nothing got me but I did take a good look upwards to check for dangling limbs and such.
Love to hunt the King of Spring!

My cousin got killed years ago when a large limb broke off a tree he was sitting against while hunting.
