Decided to get myself a new gun. 20 gauge mossberg 500 grand slam turkey series pump. Fiber optic sights, new ported mossberg x full choke, 22" barrel. Can't wait to get out and pattern. I am going to try and get my 1st longbeard with a 20 gauge this year. I have killed turkeys with my 12 gauges for some time now, Got my 1st longbeard back in 1984. Decided its time for a new challenge. The 20 gauges with todays choke and shell combo's are good 40 yard guns. I am going to start with lead in hopes of getting good patterns out to 40 yards, if not then I will go with the hevi loads

May God bless you all

Thats a great looking gun.... If you want a bonafide 40 yard 20 gauge rig, skip the lead.. Lead patterns very well to 30 to 35 yards in the 20 and falls off sharply after that

NICE!!!!!!   But I don't think that gun will be much more of a challenge than the 12 ga.   :you_rock:

X2 - a very sound piece of advice.

Nice looking rig. With the right load and choke, you probably won't be challenged at all. Your 12ga might start collecting dust, lol.

He's big enough to ride in my truck!

I shot a Hastings 562 in that gun a couple of weeks ago and had 146 in the fed HW #7s at 40 yards.  I think that my factory x full choke shot some old Rem Hevi #5s pretty well to 35 yards.

The Hastings specifies lead only. I have gotten results equal to or  greater than that from the Sumtoy choke and it shoots  lead, HTL, with no porting.

Lead loads are very good to about 35 yards using the Sumtoy choke and some are OK at 40 even but I would suggest HTL for shots greater than 35 yards with the 20 gauge.

Sweet looking gun.  Good Luck!
