Can't wait!!! Been seeing some birds struttin', heard a few gobbles as well...It should be a fun year here in Mineral County!!

I hunt in Grant county and I think it's going to be a good season.  Gobbling here good, but roosting with hens still.  Won't be hard to wake up and head out this year..  Good luck you mountaineers!

Still roosting with hens in wetzel also. Last year on the last day that Jake had a hen with it also.

I live in Berkeley County and hunt in Hamphire County.   It has really picked up in the last two weeks.  I've seen more strutters with hens in fields this year than I can ever recall.  Im guessing there will be birds gobbling well after the season is closed!

I live in Hardy but also hunt in my home county of Jefferson.  I hunted next door in Clarke Co. VA and was able to take a nice bird yesterday.  I only heard 2 gobble at daybreak and was nowhere near them.  About 9:30 one gobble quite a ways off, I called and he gobbled again at about half the distance, the next time he gobble was maybe 60 yds but still out of sight, he then sneaked up to about 30 yds.  He'll eat well.  I was back in the same area this AM and only heard 1 bird sound off at daybreak and too far away (only 1 gobble).  I looked for him but to no avail.  About 10:15 one gobbled and they turned out to be 3 jakes. I have hunted in Raleigh Co. and love it down there except for the steep terrain.  Two steps forward and one back, grab a tree and pull yourself up.  There are lots of birds there though.

I am from out of state but hunt the coal fields in McDowell.  My hunting partner is from Princeton and said he only heard 3 on our lease last Saturday. Good luck to every body.  I sure live hunting those mountain birds.

WV Ridge Reaper

I have been out everyday this week, and it has gotten quite.Spotted on in a corn filed with some hens this am,the other day I never heard one until 9 just one time.

Seems like maybe they are hened up right now,so maybe next week they will start breakin apart.

Most are henned up or still in bigger flocks. They should definitley be breaking up very soon! I have been hearing a bunch of birds lately, as well as my buddies. They really arent cranked up yet here but its coming!

I was out this yesterday and did not hear a bird until around 9:00.  Today I was over back of Woodstock, Va. and heard nothing on the roost.  I did hear a bird around 10:00 but he wouldn't cooperate.

Good luck to you guys, I am lucky enough to have jury duty Monday morning and can not get out of it. This will be the first opening day I have missed in 43 years. 44 in a row ain't going to happen for me. Maybe Tuesday I have a plan.  Can I  rinder a fair verdict, when I get asked this question on Monday. He is guilty or he would not be here. Hope this works. I have some located if I get a chance to hunt them.

I'm from preston co,and this morning was the first time i've got out at daylight to listen.I've been running to other states that are already in so i had to get out and find some local birds. It was really windy here but i still managed to hear at least 4 birds before the wind got really bad, also  went for a little ride and saw 4 more strutters but they all still have a lot of hens with them.

Birds in VA were tough on us. Really whipped our butt, weather really didnt help, rain the first day and a 40 degree temp drop the second day. Heard alot of gobbling but I think they were just gobbling to hear themselves.  Just about every bird had hens with them and wouldnt answer a turkey call at all. We could get them to shock gobble at a crow and that was about it.  We watched a strutter in a field with a hen for a long time, actually filmed him mount and mate her which was pretty cool.  We went home empty handed though.

Hearing much of the same from buddies out today in WV.  Gobbled some on the roost today then shut up, most are with hens.  Had two buddies that roosted birds last night, one killed his at 6:25 this morning, pitched to 15 yards right into his decoys and that was it, the other buddy said he never heard his this morning and he flew off with his hens down the ridge.  Stay after em guys, I really think the best is ahead of us.
