Plan on heading to NW Nebraska in Mid May. Does any body know how much the fire hurt the area and where I could possibly find a map showing the areas affected? Any tips would be appreciated Ive hunted Nebraska just not the NW corner before. Thanks

i can say that the fire ruined the area i hunted in most cases however some of the places their were live trees left not many but some. i think it was around 60 something thousand acres burnt south and west of chadron. if you look at a map hwy 385 runs south from chadron towards alliance. it burnt south on that hwy towards where the pine ridge starts and west of there due west of the state park all the way to the management area to the west, off of west ash road.

I was there 2 years ago. Lots of birds. I suggest to order a map from the forestry service. You can do that online. Call the. Regiona game wardenl office and request WMA maps. I strongly sugest hunting the Ponderosa WMA. It's a heck of a hike to where the birds are but when you get there you'll be satisfied. Not a far hike just all up hill. Make sure you are in shape for it. All you have to do is park across from the maintenance buildings ( you can't miss them)   follow the road and it'll take you to the birds. We never saw anyone else hunting it when we were there.
