Nothing discourages me more than the wind. When your sense of hearing birds is robbed from you it's easy to get into a funk.

What do you guys do when the wind is howling?

I try to find a low area out of the wind and sit and wait.

sometimes I use a really windy day to scout new places. You never know when one may bust off close to you.

I hate wind too, but be sure, many birds are strutting somewhere!

As dumb and obvious as it sounds, look for anyplace out of the wind where he can strut and not have his fan blown all over the place.

Many windy states will have fields & pastures with their own wind breaks, Nebraska has some textbook fields where wind can be deadly...

If its not extremely windy, I like to use it to my advantage. If I cant hear them, then they cant hear me. This is when I move and call. When I hear them I get set up and wait. I killed two of my biggest turkeys this way. If the wind is real bad I look for lower elevations where there is less wind.

On windy days...I'll prefer to search the lee side of hills that block the wind. Pine wood barrens, or clusters of pine trees --- are also a good spot to find gobblers --- especially on windy days.

Gale force winds?...when trees an tree limbs are falling {besides pine woods} --- I'll try to head for fields, meadows and  open logging roads.

I use windy days to "deer hunt" turkeys. I take my blind or build one and sit in my gobbler lounger over looking a know strut zone or dusting zone. I may sit there all day or 30 minutes. It just depends on what I have to do at home and if I am interested in hunting that day.

I get to hunt it all season long down here in So california. So I break out the long box call and go to work. I try to find low spots or saddles to hunt in,since the trees are thick where I hunt and they do a good job blocking the wind.
