I was just wanderin what's the prettiest wood that has the best sound for a pot call. My grandma "maw june" passed away today and I'm wantin to have a pot call made in her memory. Normally I don't care how it looks I just want a good sound but been as this is gonna be a special call I want it to look and sound as good as it can.

Thanks
Justin

Gabon Ebony is the richest looking wood out there in my opinion and it's acoustic qualities have been proven as well.  To find a call maker that you like and his willingness to find a block big enough to turn for the pot may be another thing.  If you do get one turned from this material get ready to get the check book out as the wood is expensive to begin with.

Apologizing:  does not always mean you are wrong and the other person is right.
It just means that you value your relationship more than your ego.

Sorry for the loss of your grand mother. Certain Walnut woods have great looks and sound qualities, Lacewood makes a great pot call also, and so does a Spalted Pecan and Maples, a long with the Ebonies.

Our thoughts and prayers to you and your family for your loss of your dear Grandmother...the idea of a tribute call is the perfect way to keep her memory alive during the coming years. I have discovered many excellent quality woods over the years, but two stand out alone ... Snakewood and Arizona Desert Ironwood Burl .... both have excellent sound qualities and both are dense ... one other choice would be Amboyna Burl wood, even though more expensive it has a great feminine appeal to it. Obviously you would want a glass or crystal striking surface to see her picture mounted on the soundboard, which could then be used as a secondary striking surface and slate  would work well here. Again, my condolences and God Bless, pappy

Black walnut or black cherry some of the best deep grain woods I have found. Matched up with a Crape myrtle striker on slate. I have also found some driftwoods that were awesome looking on the grain also, but it's hard sometimes to identify the wood.

Best thing to do is google the type of call you are looking for.  Then right down the wood that interests you.  When it come to "prettiest" its really a personal thing.

For a memory of a Female I would personally lean toward a figured maple.  It just has that feminine mystic to it.  Curly maple with glass surface with picture of the 2 of you if possible placed on soundboard with her favorite flower placed on the back would be my choice.

great idea you have going, take your time and go with your heart. :mycross:

No trees were hurt in the sending of this message, however a large number of electrons were highly inconvenienced.

Stoner

Quilted Sapele or Waterfall Bubinga. Both are nice wood to use in a friction call.
