I got this email this morning.

I've read that they are gonna offer a Model 783 to compete with the Ruger American rifle.  I'm a huge Remington fan but haven't heard great things about the looks of the 783.  There is a big market for low priced rifles right now!

I'm getting tired of this "cheap plastic rifle" trend. I miss the old days when rifle makers produced beautiful, tack driving quality rifles. Look at the old Rem 700 bdl's, etc. At least I can still buy a new winchester model 70 super grade that looks and feels like a rifle should. Sorry for the rant, just really hate cheap ugly rifles.

They still make beautiful, quality rifles. They just don't sell them for $300 any more.

To look at the glass as half full, it's amazing how nice a rifle you can buy now for well under $400. (Marlin X7, Ruger American, etc) No, it won't have a walnut stock and polished blue steel, but it will work and be accurate. OTOH, there's the Remington 710/770. What a sad excuse for a rifle that is. No wonder Remington is coming out with a new inexpensive rifle, and not a moment too soon.

everyone is bashing remington for this rifle their is a big market for budget priced rifles and they want a piece of the pie it looks like a good rifle to me is it a 700 no but neither is the price tag its definetley a upgrade over the  770 and 710

The problem isn't just with their cheap rifles, I've handled several newer model 700's even and it seems their QC is a bit lax these days. They just don't give off that "quality" vibe that Remingtons of 10 yrs ago or 20 etc do. Plus the hideous plastic stocks that seem to be in vogue these days. I love a good synthetic stock, (Bell & Carlsen, HS precision, Mcmillian etc) but injection molded plastic is horrible. I love the model 700 action and will continue to shoot them but I will start with the action and build the quality of rifle I want out of it. This model 783 may be an upgrade over the 710 and 770, but it don't take much LOL.

I always liked the Rem. model 788. Nothing fancy but a proven performer. Anyone know why Rem stopped production. IMO they hung right with the 700's.

FttFttVroom!

Agree on the 788, I have one in .243 and took my first deer with it.  Rumors say it outshot the 700 so they discontinued it.  It will be my son or daughters someday.
