Hurricane Sandy - some food for thought

Indulge me for a few moments...

  I'm sure that most of us here are sick of all of the political mud-slinging, finger pointing and ugly politics that have surrounded the upcoming re-election.  Likely most of us have long-since made our decisions in regards to which way our own vote will be cast.  Many of us know more about the candidates, be it positive or negative, than we have about any candidates in any other election in the past.  The coverage goes non-stop... day and night... everywhere you turn. 

STOP!!!

  Do you think it is any coincidence that a storm that some refer to as "freak" or at least "out-of-the-ordinary" would hit... now...?  News reports show that our president has left the campaign trail to head back to DC to "monitor" the storm, as well as any leader of the most powerful nation in the world should. 
   Bear with me.  America has become a self-centered nation, focused on what "I" can get, do or be.  This mindset drips from the current administration and political leaders in general who do whatever it takes to grab money and power to promote themselves and their own agendas.  We have seen steps taken that would limit the ability of those who believe in Christ to express their views, practice their beliefs outside of the walls of the church building and even force some to provide funding for services that run contrary to their beliefs.  In the past weeks we have seen our president and our secretary of state publicly verbalize pro-islamic statements - defending the beliefs and practices of islam, a religion that leaves no place for Jehovah God and His believers.
   Think again... do you think the timing of this storm is a conincidence?  Some of you may be thinking I have completely lost it.  Give me just another couple of minutes before you pass that judgment.  Even the insurance industry recognizes floods, storms and catastrophic events in nature as an "act of God".  This simply means that the event and its results are outside the control or prevention of any human hands, decisions or actions.  In other words... there ain't a thing you can do about it.
    For weeks we have been in a frenzied cycle of puffed up chests and pointed fingers.  Politicians and their followers beating their own drums and condemning the likes of their opponents.  Take a look at Yahoos home page today.  You'll see only a tiny fraction of the political stories you saw even last week.  The election is getting closer with each day.  There is only 8 days left to convince those voters still teetering on the fence...  Why so little coverage of political matters all of a sudden?
   Even satan himself takes note when God begins to stir.  Take a look at the following, the opening passage of our Declaration of Independence:

"When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation."

  Our founding fathers recognized "the laws of nature and of nature's God".  Our current political fathers see only a storm on the horizon.  Look at the video "loop" of the coming hurricane.  Maybe it's just me, but I envision the finger of God swirling those clouds and the water.  The impact of His moving is getting ready to bring some changes.  For some it will be loss of property.  For some it will be loss of life.  Predictions are not good in regards to either. 
   Think about your own life for a few minutes.  Those times throughout our lives where we tend to most recognize a "power" greater or bigger than ourselves are often in times of tragedy or loss.  We come to that place where we recognize and admit that in our own strength, there is or was nothing that we could do to change the situation or the outcome of a situation.  In that moment, we are brought face to face with the fact that there is someone or something at work in our lives that is bigger, stronger and more in control than we are.  Does it always seem fair?  NO.  Does it seem like sometimes innocent people suffer?  YES.  Would we have come to that complete, total realization of how little we actually have control of in life without the tragedy?  Honestly?  LIKELY NOT. 
   God is moving.  You can choose to believe that or not.  One thing you can't deny, though, is that there is a storm on the horizon that will effectively shift the laser aimed focus of a nation from the power and influence of 2 men to an "act of God".  What you do with that is your choice.  Some of us here are going to be more directly effected by this storm than others.  Some may need to take drastic measures to try to avoid more serious damage to property, life and limb.  Some may just sit back and shake their head in wonder at pictures, video and stories of the damage. 
  Will America wake up?

I was actually thinking about this earlier and I don't think you have lost your marbles. Call it coincidence or whatever, but the fact is that all the chips fell into place to make this storm as big and powerful as it is and the timing is uncanny. I do think the big guy upstairs sends messages and this one should be received loud and clear. The Lord will move this country in the right direction, I truly believe that. I too think our focus needs to shift.

Wendell, well stated and well written.
God has acted before with natural events to get the attention of people back where it needs to be, and that is on Him. I too have become tired of all of the political chest thumping and maybe fall guility of focusing more on debates than making things a true issue of prayer (shame on me and I repent of that right now).
May God help us to not forget Him and to ask for His guidance and His presence in our country and in our daily lives.
