Just curious if any call maker has ever tried to make a call from this? Would be something,to carry a call that the wood was around back in the Dinosaurs days! Awesome Grain, and Outlandish prices.

Wow Bob, would love to hear the story behind that one!

West Augusta

Harmonden calls made some from petrified wood.
No trees were hurt in the sending of this message, however a large number of electrons were highly inconvenienced.

I have 1 turned but haven't glued it up yet. I think i'll get 1 more 3.5" & 2  2.5" purr pots out of that piece of wood . It does look good , I just hope it sounds the same. We'll see  ;D .

That would be super cool to build a call from but I cant justify the prices of the wood unless someone specified the call be made from that wood. Those boys are on a gold mine when they pull one of those out of the ground.

The ones I'making will be for me. If they don't sound good I'll bust  apart & try something different, if that don't work I'll put them in a display case.

Need to get in touch with those cajuns on Axe Men.  They salvage the sinker logs.  Fun to watch, but would love to try some of the wood.

I agree Wendell... It'd be pretty neat to our hands on some wood those guys pull...

I made two trumpets out of ancient Kauri. It's pretty lightweight, not real dense, maybe similar to walnut or chestnut. I enjoyed working with it & am looking forward to picking up some more. Here's a link to the ones that I posted on here: http://oldgobbler.com/Forum/index.php/topic,23658.msg257071.html#msg257071

I have a customer who provided me with a piece of Kauri that he wants a duck call made out of, supposed to be 50,000 years old. I have had it in the shop for several months and am afraid to touch it in case it explodes :toothy12:

I haven't used any of this wood, but I have worked with Bog Wood from Missouri swamps, it was oak and it was blacker then midnight with no stars, good dense wood, but when turning it you need to be sure to wear protection because there is thousands of years of built up bacteria inside pieces like these. Also made some calls from some ancient cypress, very close grained wood, great for box calls...

Best I've had was some cypress that I calculated to be growing in MO back before 1400.  Would love to tackle that really old stuff.
