Been scouting two toms for a couple of weeks burning up gas money to try and see where they were roosting.
They have been really wary and have been keeping out of sight in a draw/creek area while walking up to their roost site in evening.   I've hunted them mid-morning a couple of times but they were henned up and would gobble to my call but not much else.   Cared less about decoys.
I got lucky last night and got in to my observation position about 7:50 PM central time and caught the bigger of the two walking in the open towards his roost.  I could see clearly a paintbrush beard.  Couldn't sleep last night with the anticipation to go after him this morning.  Took all the right planning steps , up super early, drove around the section to come in completely out of sight, parked a long ways off, used the tree line to cover my movements in...moon was right, almost pitch dark.  So dark I lost track of the trees he went towards at roost...wondered if I had walked right by him or had gone too far.
Set up in some small evergreens on west side of the creek...guessing he was pretty close to me...got in completely silent...no decoys. At 6:00 AM he gobbled so close to me I got goosebumps!  Great morning listening to him gobble his head off and he flew down practically over my head...landed 50 yds out.  Couple of soft yelps and he's on the way back to me.  Closed the deal at 25 yards at 6:30 AM,  22 lb, 10" beard 1 1/8" spurs. Made it to work at 7:00AM!

I sure like those longer hunts where you call in a big tom from a long ways off etc. etc. but dang it is fun to mix it up once in a while with a short and sweet one!

Thanks guys!

May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?

Gotta love it when you can still make it to work on time!!!  Save that time for one of those grind it out hunts later in the season.  Congrats!
