pellet county hevi vs FHW

I pulled up an old post about pellet count and I was shocked to see the difference

2oz hevi 7's- 508

1-5/8oz FHW 7's- 353

These are both the same length shell (3")

By going with the 3" Feds you are losing over 100 pellets in a shell. Why would anyone want to shoot the 3" FHW when you are losing that many pellet VS the HS?

In a 20ga however, you gain pellets with the Feds.

1.5oz FW 7's- 326

1-1/4oz hevi- 318

It would make more sense to shoot the feds out of a 20ga and the hevi out of the 12 based off of pellet count.

Am I wrong on this?

Devastator

i will shoot the feds out of my 10,12,and 20 based on my patterns at 40 with all guns.the nephews benelli 20 liked the hevi so that is what he is going to be using in a couple weeks.

I understand patterns dictate which ones to use, however, the difference in the amount of pellents in the 3" shell is pretty significant.

You are not wrong about pellet counts. But pellet counts are not the only criteria for choosing shot size/material. The HW 7s penetrate much better and maintain their velocity much better than HS 7s. The HW 7s maintain lethal penetration values to crazy distances that the admins don't like us to talk about. But put another way, the HW 7s @ 1300 fps penetrate as deeply @ 40 yds as HS 7s @ 1090 fps do @ 6 yds. At 40 yds, it really makes no difference. Both will kill turkeys easily.

Wow! Those are some interesting facts. I guess one has to decide if payload and more shot on target out weighs penetration. With the HS, what you lose in penetration you gain in 100+ more shot being thrown down range. On the other hand, with the FHS, your payload is much less but you penetrate better.

Like you said before.....if you limit your shots to around 40 yards it doesn't matter.

I shoot the hevi 13 7's in my WIn. son shoots the feds HW 7's in his sb,he killed 1 Sat. at 35 yeards, stone cold, the HW, 7's shot slam through it, never found a pellet in the bird,At 1300 fps they are killers, 100 pelets is not much to worry about if it pts enoung in the kill zone.
Hunt every day as if it were your last.

I might have to try some FHW in my Benelli M1 next year and see if they come anywhere close to the hevi 7's. The hevi 7's are giving me anywhere from 270-290 at 40 yards right now

With the results some are getting with the new Trulock choke I am gonna give the Feds a try in my 12 next year, they are mean on a turkeys Noggin, the 2 my son has shot this year at mid 30 yards have been eat up with shot and I acually watched 1 of those birds head hit the ground before his body did.

Me too.

doesn;t the ssx put up good numbers with the fhw? I tried some through my 20ga 870 with ssx and it out shot the hevi 7's.

bawana

I use a Carlson's .660 non ported with both my heavyweights and my hevi's. Get about 220 -240 with the hevi's and 160-180 with the heavyweights........I shoot the HW, I've killed three birds with them, and they have flat out knocked the snot out of all three of them!

not gonna support a certain brand but ive never been impressed with federal, even with rifle bullets for deer hunting
