Well our season here in NC opens a week from Saturday.  I got two farms close to my house that I been seeing a lot of birds on, so I went and talked to the old man that owns it.  He said sure you can turkey hunt it, and the best thing is only one other guy is turkey hunting it.  He told me a couple of months ago he counted 75 birds in one of the fields!  Being gas is $4 a gallon here it is good to have somewhere closer than my turkey lease which is 75 miles away.  It probably helped that his wife used to babysit my wife.  Reminds me the worst thing they can tell you is no if you ask permission to hunt.

Nice pick up.

I called nine different property owners at the beginning of March asking for permission to or lease the turkey rights as these properties are near my house but struck out on all nine.  Several did thank me for calling first as in this day and age it seems that asking forgiveness is much easier than asking permission.

congratulations on the acquisition. No better feeling than picking up permission for a new parcel of land. Except for maybe that first bird you kill there.

Shellwaster, if I were you I would go pay a visit to some of those landowners you called earlier. I get permission a lot higher % of the time in person than over the phone, I think it makes a landowner more comfortable seeing your face and being able to get a better first impression. Especially since you already called, that is a perfect set-up that has gotten me into properties. They say no over the phone, and then let me in after an in-person visit. "Hows it going, I'm ______, I called about turkey hunting permission awhile ago? Just figured I would stop in and introduce myself in person...."

Shoot the bull with them for awhile, talk farming, hunting, whatever, and you will be surprised how often they have a change of heart and let you in after seeing you are a responsible, respectful guy.

Just confirmed my permission for the third year in a row on a field adjacent to my work.  First year I asked the owner said 'I'm surprised you even asked.  Most people just go.  What are you going to do?  You can't watch it all the time.'  It was pure frustration on his part dealing with treespassers.  Made sure to let him know I'm parking, walking in, and how much of a good time my partner and I had the years before.

I figure once we get going my son and I are going to head over with some of Grandma's apple pies to show our appreciation.  Plus, we had toms within shooting distance both times we hunted it.  This year I'm going to man the gun though and just go with my son.

It's always good when you get new places to hunt. Congrats,
