ok fellas , im new here and ive bowhunted mostly all my life and im kind of new to the shotgun - choke combos . ive read some stuff that has me questioning some of these combos i have, and dont really know if i should try some chokes i have for 2 20 ga shotguns im going to be patterning soon . i have a encore in a 20 ga and so far the only choke i have is a .572 undertaker. it says lead shot only on it . the second gun is a 20 ga rem 870 sureshot and i have a jelley head in a .570, a tightwad in a .570 and a kicks gobbling thunder in a .560. the only shells i have are hevi shot in #5s in 1 1/4 oz 3 in , and some winchester x tended range high density which i assume is not lead also since it says heavier than lead on the box . they are #5s also . i dont understand why it says i can shoot hevi shot through the jelleyhead and the tightwad when they measure .570, and it says not to on the undertaker which meausures .572 on my calipers . can somebody please tell me what shells i can shoot out of my chokes especially the kicks one since its the tightest one i have . is it safe or am i going to blow something up , lol .

The 870 should shoot awsome with the Remington super full extended choke with the Federal Heavyweight 6 or 7's or Hevi-13 6 or 7's. Or try to find a Hastings .562, .566, .570. All of those shoot good but not as well as the RSF choke.

Here's a general rule on chokes. "Only the manufacturer knows what type of material he uses and how his choke is manufactured. He is the one who "rates" his choke tube."

Some chokes will state, on the package or on the choke itself, what type of material is used to make them and some won't. They may be specific or simply state some type of steel that is used.

Even if they state, for example the type of steel, we don't know if they are made from bar stock or tubing and there is no requirement for a full disclosure on the choke packaging or on the choke itself.

We have several small choke tube manufactures in this area that cater to "card shooters".  All of them that I know use "seamless steel tubing" to make their chokes. They are beautiful products in many cases and some are quite complex in their designs but none would recommend that you use any tungsten-based shot in them.

Most times, chokes rated for tungsten-based shot, like Hevi-Shot are made from some type of hardened steel. Chokes that are rated for lead only generally are not made from hardened steel but that rule does not hold firm.

Some choke manufacturers who make their chokes from hardened steel do not recommend that shells with tungsten-based shot, like Hevi-Shot,  be used in them.

It has little if anything to do with the exit diameter but rather the specific recommendation from the manufacturer. Since he knows more about his choke, how it's made, what materials are used, design features, etc. than we do or can know, it's a good idea to follow his recommendation.

Since some of your chokes are "lead only" rated, that's what I'd recommend you use and confine the use of tungsten-based shot to those chokes that are "Hevi-Shot" rated.

Make sense?

Thanks,

thank you allaboutshooting , crystal clear info that makes alot of sense . i guess i will just get a few boxes of lead 6s or 7s and see how they pattern out of the kicks and the undertaker . ill leave the hevi shot and the winchester xtended shells for the ones that are rated for it . i dont really want to spend any more money on chokes and shells this year , but at least the lead stuff isnt as hard on the wallet as the hevi stuff . i might look into getting some of the other recomended chokes next year but this year ill make due with what i have . thanks , fellas
