I polished the barrell on my Mossy 500 and lead numbers increased greatly but my heavyweight numbers fell off by 50-60 pellet count! Has anyone else had this occur?
I normally "deep clean" my barrels with Hoppe's #9 per the guidelines in the article
"Cleaning a Shotgun Barrel" that you can find by clicking on my banner below.
That always improves my patterns and from all the reports I've had from readers, has improved their as well.
It sounds like the change could be as a result the effect on the Flitecontrol Wad of your polished barrel, if I read correctly that you're shooting Heavyweight shot.
I have noted that some barrels shoot that wad (and others) better when slightly fouled.
Here's what I'd recommend. Start by "deep cleaning" your barrel and then shoot a few rounds without cleaning between each shot. You may begin to notice that your patterns improve (regardless of shotshell) before they begin to degrade.
In any case, I'd suspect that shooting a few rounds through it without cleaning may get you back where you were prior to the procedure and hopefully even better.
Thanks,
Clark
