Have a nove with a comp n choke xxxfull, never thought of patterning a gun until this year but never had a problem unail last. Just curious i see these numbers coming out and didnt know if anyone had ny amsuggestions for this set up. have shot kents, fiocchis, and winchesters and am only getting at best 200 or so at 30 yrds and only 70ish at 40?? shooting number 5 3.5s. Just not pleased  :character0029:with anything im shooting and for a kicker missed 4 birds last year, which made limiting a wee bid difficult

i would switch to 6's in most 3.5" shells 6's will give you about 100 more pellets in the shell than 5's will so your pattern numbers are bound to improve, lead 6's have more than enough energy to kill at 40yds if the pattern density is there

if you can get to around 100 in the 10" at 40 then you should be good to go, since you said you missed 4 last year i would also check the point of aim and point of impact, it can vary from shell brand to shell brand so take a look at that

lead 5's 170-175 per oz
lead 6's 225 per oz

DO NOT shoot any heavier than lead shot through a Comp N Choke.

3" 870 Shell Shucker

Even 90 in 10" will do, but I wouldn't trust any less than that.

I would try some Winchester Supreme XX Mag 3.5-2.25-6 or Winchester Supreme High Velocity 3.5-2-6 and see what kind of numbers those put up for you.  Out of my Nova with a .655 Jellyhead and Win Supreme XX Mag 3-2-6 I get about 130 hits in a 10" circle at 40 yards.

As another person suggested, I'd also shoot at a big piece of paper or cardboard (36"x36") and see where the bulk of your load is going.

Thanks for the input, gunna try a few more things before I give up on the nova and go back to the A5. The fiocchi loads pack a punch at 2 3/8 oz load so would be very curious to see where they are all going at 30 yds.

Winchester H-V 3.5'' #6's. They are a good combo with that choke and they are relatively cheap..Mike :you_rock:

In my opinion there is no need to stick with 5's if you shoot Hevi 7's....BUT....you will need another choke.  The CnC choke can't take the Hevi stuff.  The 7's have MORE than enough power and penetration to get the job done at 50 yard + ranges....And your pattern density will GREATLY improve.

usually 5's require a little less constriction, also the 2 3/8oz payload is a very large payload for the 12ga bore theres not enough room for the shot to settle and it results in the bad patterns. so you might want to try a shell with a little less payload say 2oz

which winchesters have you tried the xx's or the high velocities? if you have not tried the high velocities i would give them a try they have a 2oz payload and are very good shooting shells, i think that you will find that with a little tinkering you will be able to get the compnchoke to produce good patterns for you

sometimes larger payload isn't always better
