blue loctite

I won't be surprised if this thing lasts for years though.  The gobble stopper lasted two seasons and as far as I know its still working.  And I put quite a few rounds through it sighting it in once here in Pa and another sighting in session when I hunted in Maine, because they won't let you use anything smaller than 6 shot up there.

When this thing does go, I think I might try one of their more pricier dots.  This traditional dot seems descent for the money.  Plus I live the fact that I have a see through mount on the Thug so I can still see the irons anyways.  And I always test both POA and POI on dot and irons.

Is it really necessary to use anything on scope mounts?

Yes. I use blue loctite. I have used clear fingernail polish a couple times when I didn't have loctite. I've had scope bases on a couple rifles work loose some years ago. Been using loctite ever since.

Two of you fellas mentioned finger nail polish now.  I never thought of that.  Does it work good?  The Mrs. has that stuff, shoot I wish I'd known to use that.  Oh well, by the responses I got the GG should work.  I used the GG on one of the wifes bird feeders one time so I know it works good on wood.  The plastic on this red dot still has me worried though.  Will find out in another hour.  That will be two hours and I'm going to shoot this new shotty for the first time.

Wish me luck!  My shoulders going to need it.

My biggest worry was if it would hold, because it says it won't adhere well with poly ethelene and something else I forget off the top of my head.  Yeah I also learned the hard way with that gobbledot when I was sighting it in.  It vibrated loose on me a bit the first time.  Blue LT is awesome.  I to had it recommended by a smith.  I'd never use the red LT though on one of my firearms.

I have used Gorilla Glue to mount sights on plain barrels and it works. It's just important to clean the surface and allow for expansion.

I use JB Weld under every base that I mount and thread locker on all of the base screws.

Prior to doing that, I had bases shoot loose and that's a real problem. It not only messes up your day but it usually means a new drill and tap job on the receiver.

Normally, you can remove any type of scope, leave the base on the gun and use it for wing shooting, etc. The base really does not interfere with that.

Thanks,
Clark

P.S. At a still target shoot last year, Brian Sloan, a great shooter, had a base come loose from his gun and the scope, base and all hit him in the face. It cut him very badly in the forehead and could have been much worse. He has a pretty large "battle scar" from that encounter.

JB Weld......interesting....I haven't used that stuff in along time.   I've never used it on a rifle or a shotgun, but I won't hesitate now.

Thanks for the pointer,

Jason

I had a gunsmith tell me one time to never put red loctite on scope mounting screws. He said it would the heck trying to ever get it off if I wanted to. He said to always use blue loctite. Apparently it holds just fine, but with some effort, you can back a screw out if you absolutely need to.

Yeah I had a gunsmith tell me the exact same thing.  I'd never use the red, but the blue works fine.

I've only used red on alloy recievers and it worked.  Took one off, tough, but it came off.  I've used blue on alloy and steel with good results.  Blue is quite easy to remove even after they've been on a while IME.  As I mentioned, I know a smith that uses red on every base.  I don't believe I'd go that route on everything.  He claimed he'd seen blue back off too many times.
