What are some pattern you guys are going with for a 20ga 870 youth 21 in barrel rem?  I was wanting some choke/shell combinations for hevi shot and just some standard shells ( a little less expensive) lol.
thanks for any info

Ky,
I realize that money can be tight and always a consideration in discretionary spending and no one knows how much one can spend than the man with the wallet.  However, in turkey hunting, unless you walk from your house to the woods,  one of the smallest expenditures of today's turkey hunting would still be the cost of shells it takes to harvest a legal limit of birds.  Save money on family meals, not turkey loads. ;)

A good starting point would be some Federal Heavyweight 7's out of a Remington Superfull choke,MidwayUSA use to have for them around $10.

I think this is combo that I am eventually going to end up with myself.
That choke is a good, cheap investment that will allow you to shoot all kinds of loads. I heard they like the Hevi 7's coming out of em too.
Lot's of hunters putting birds down with the loads mentioned above.
Think I am going to take their advice :you_rock:

This. Get 170-180 in 10" @40 yards consistently. 21" youth 870 20ga

That should get the job done :you_rock:

I have this choke in the same gun.  Might have to give the FHW a try.  Could seem to find anything else that would pattern worth a darn out of it.

Yep! My best pattern last year when I was sighting in with that exact set up was 192 at a ranged 40 yards.

My 21" barrel 870 doesn't like that choke either.....with FHW or Hevi 7's.

Are the federal heavyweights safe to shoot through a standard choke?  What exactly is the shot made of?
thanks

The Fed's have the Flite Control wad wich is best used when paired with a non-ported choke. Most chokes are designed to strip the wad, but this wad is designed to stay "with the load" longer.
The Tempest choke I believe is designed specifically for the Fed's.
I believe the constriction is .555 for 20's.

Clarke, who is a true shooting guru, suggests in one of his articles that for the shorter barrel 20's using a Tru-Glo SSX choke with HEVI-SHOT 7's. The shorter barrel guns are typically harder to pattern, but, this combo is what he had great results with.

I have this same gun from when I was younger and have been thinking about turkey hunting with it for several years now.  I almost bought the Remington SF for it when it was $9 but now I can't find it cheaper than 25.  Oh well.  I have always heard good things about the Remington SF and the HW#7.  I may actually have to try it this year.

My son shoots a 870 youth standard full choke nitro 7's killed his first turkey last year 38 yds. One of the best hunts of my life.
