Help a newbie! Hevi-shot 13 questions

Hey guys,

So after doing some research on here, I think I'm going to go with Hevi-13s. I want to do it right the first time, so what choke(s) would yall suggest? What size shot? 6? 7? I will be shooting the 3.5" shells because of the increased payload.

I'm shooting a Mossy 535

Also, where do you find the best prices on the Hevi-13s?

Any reason i should NOT shoot hevi-13s 3.5" shells?

From my personal experience, I got pretty decent numbers from the 3-2-6 Hevi shot and a Jellyhead .660 choke(best numbers were 189 in a 10" circle at 40 yards). I have also seen great numbers from the Indian Creek chokes.
Number 7 hevi has a strong following here, and will get you very good numbers at 40. I just prefer #6 shot. My gun didn't shoot the 3.5's as well as it patterned with 3" better. You might have different results.

I shoot the 3.5" #7s and have total confidence in them at 50 yards incase I misjudge a bird. When it comes to chokes there are many that shoot great. The shells seem to be more important then the choke but puregold, indian creek, jellyhead, rhino, hevi shot, and sum toy all seem to be good chokes.

Don't overlook the Magnum Blends by Hevi-Shot as well. They are capable of throwing awesome patterns out of that gun with all the chokes listed.

Make sure and buy a choke tube designed to handle the hevi loads.

I'd recommend the Hevi-13 shells without reservation. My guns shoot #6 and #7 shot equally well but I prefer the #6s. There are folks who prefer 3" shells and those who prefer 3.5" shells. The bottom line is that both work very well to kill turkeys. Again, it's a matter of both choice and trying them in your gun to see which it shoots better and what you feel works for you.

Chokes all have their fans. The good news is that most well designed chokes will work well in your gun. I shoot a lot of different guns and lots of different chokes, pretty much year-round, when the weather allows. I also see folks in competition shoot a variety of different guns and chokes. Most are quite good.

Some that I'd consider would be Pure Gold, Hevi-13 turkey chokes, the SSX and JEB's chokes. I don't know if you could find 4 more different internal designs than those but they all work very well and have high quality construction.

Lastly, I'd recommend that you "deep clean" the bore prior to your patterning session to allow your gun to be at its best when you start.
