Quote from: Dougas on April 29, 2025, 09:08:16 PMWhen I was hunting with my 20 gauge that I used for grouse and quail, I put a turkey choke on it and I shot Long Beard XR 20 gauge shells out to 40 yards and did fine with it.

I've shot LB XR's out of my daughters 20ga for a few years. Maybe its the choke, but it doesnt do well past 25 yards. I missed a bird with it last week at about 30yds. Who knows if it was me, the load or something else but it didnt give me a ton of confidence in the Longbeards out of it. Propobably just need to try a different choke in it. I think its a cheap TruGlo GobbleStopper

i had sumtoy cut down my 870SM to 18.5" from 28" he includes a choke of choice with his service. i did that solely for the purpose of having a more compact gun to handle.

Buy a cheap single shot 20 or even 12ga if you want to keep shooting Longbeard loads, 20ga Longbeard are not impressive most of the time.

I have zero interest in any gun over 6lbs, carry a light gun one day and you will see the light.

I think Yildiz or someone has a really light 12ga.  Single shot or SXS.

I have been considering a 20g, mostly due to weight and my style of running and gunning.  After age 50 my long 12g pump with pistol grip started to be pretty heavy on my shoulder after a long day.  I made a spreadsheet so I could sort by various factors, including weight and length.  Due to weight the Mossberg 500 was a ways down my list.  Here are some others you may consider - Mossberg SA-20 Turkey, Benelli M2 Turkey, Mossberg SA-20 Tactical Turkey, Winchester SXP NWTF Turkey.

I'm 95% sure I'm going to just buy a Maverick 88 Bantam 20 gauge for $250, then add a $100 collapsible pistol grip stock from kicklite on it. The gun is 5.2lbs which will be really nice. Its the same length and weight as the 500 Bantam at half the price.

The only other one that is interesting is the 510 mini- thats 5 lbs w/ a 18.5" barrel vs 22" on the Maverick. But again its about double the price. I dont want to do that to save 4oz and 3" in overall length. I really like the safety being by the trigger on the Maverick vs up top on the regular Mossbergs. Those suck to get to especially if you have a pistol grip.

My 12s have been retired for 4 years. I roll my 20-gauge ammo using fellow members' recipes. My 20-gauge patterns are way better than my 12s, lead ammo, at 45 yards. Using TSS in a 12 is a waste of money, no brainer...

I went to a 20 this past year, only because a buddy bought one and gave it to me.  Mine is the tri star G-2 and I love everything about it except the trigger.  About to ship the assembly off for some serious work.

Be ready to spend a little on the trigger as I understand that tri star and mossberg triggers are basically the same.  If your looking at a pump that may not be the case.  Most of the newer guns I have dealt with have really crappy triggers unless your talking about the higher end guns.

You can buy a trigger spring from MCarbo for less than 15 dollars and fix the trigger pull ... It's easy to do and they have a step by step video on how to change it out... It will change your trigger pull to about 3 pounds or less.

Yes sir - I purchased the mcarbo trigger spring and installed it and it definitely improved the weight of the trigger.  My issue is the length of the pull on the trigger - it is agonizingly long.  I realize because its an auto gun that most manufactures have a liability issue, but hoping a good smith can do something with it.  Even a little bit will be a big help.

I did that and it made my trigger amazing Greg.
