WV Season Action?

How is the season going for my fellow West Virginians?

I've seen some people having luck on social media but not a ton.

Currently in the woods for my first hunt of the season and it's been slow.

Hunting a WMA, heard two distant gobbles, started to work their way and into a spot I had preplanned and saw another hunter across this open area, backed out and hope I didn't ruin his hunt , though I was the only one at the gate at 6:30. He may have came in from the lower side.

Called back and forth for a minute with a hen and tried to get her fired up by cutting at her but she must not have liked it since she went quiet.

Now just sitting against a tree quietly, hoping one gets lonely and sounds off so I can make an attempt at one today.

where I hunt in southern WV I have only heard a very small amount of daylight gobbling (silence after that) but, I always favor the last couple weeks so I'm hoping things will get better.

A lot of roost gobbling but very little on the ground in Boone. I've been fortunate to kill two but I've had to work for them.
Seems like they're just breaking from hens, I would imagine over the next week it should fire up pretty good for killing.

Normal so far. My boy missed on one youth day. I killed one opening day and we have hunted twice since. Bad weather had the birds shut down both days but there were still gobblers around. Figure he will kill one this week.

Some roost gobbling, fairly quiet here in Marshall Co. weather has been crappy so far.

I hunted some private in central WV from April 26th to 30th. Three of us killed 3 toms and a jake over those 5 days. Gobbling was moderate on the roost and very minimal once they flew down. A few toms came in to calls silently. Only one of those was killed. It seemed like you had to get real close into their bubble while they were roosted for them to come in once they flew down. There was an occasional late morning gobble but they would not commit either.

Everyone's comments seem about right compared to my hunt on Friday after I made this post.

Played cat and mouse with a bird from 10:30ish till one.

He would gobble at my calls from a copper pot and nothing else but wouldn't come closer, probably due to a drainage he was across.

Once I committed to going to him, he got further away but then silently circled above me. I had him within 100 and probably 50 but he was behind thick stuff so I never actually got eyes on him.

I assume he was just gobbling and strutting in the same area but didn't want to get too much more aggressive and spook him.

Going to try again this Friday go straight to that area he was at and hope he likes to frequent it, if someone doesn't catch up with him this week.

Other than him, I didn't hear anything else.

finally got on the board here in southern WV this morning. couple gobbles at daybreak and silence. I knew they were there so I sat up and called soft a few times and it wasn't long before I caught movement and sure enough, 2 birds. one was a strutter and the other a looker. couldn't make out how long their beards were for sure but when the looker stretched up to have a see I shot him. he actually flopped a couple times and the strutter jumped on him like a prize fighter. I've seen this a few times before and just can't figure why the sound of the gunshot don't send'em a sailing. anyway, I sure hope the gobbeling gets better next week.
