I've chased these birds a long time, but I love reading and learning about the birds and listening to knowledgeable people.

Let's help folks out ----- Give one book, video or podcast that will help someone grow or appreciate these birds for what they mean to you.

I like to read, so I have several that I enjoy:  Nunnery, Williams, Phillips, Brady, Bland, Simon Everitt, Latham, Lee, Harbour, and Kelly.    I guess my favorites would be Brady, Williams, and Nunnery, just for the way they wrote, but Lee was just knowledgeable and knew it.

I think there's a gold mine of knowledge right here on OG. Man put a few people from here together to collaborate on a book and it could be awesome. From hunting, call making, calling and life experience it would be an epic tale. All we need is a Ghost writer I guess.

No podcasts have been brought up yet I believe. I have found that the Spring Legion Podcast, Speak the Language Podcast, and Cuz Strickland's Fistful of Dirt podcast has an extremely helpful series called "The Secret Sauce" where he interviews folks in the turkey hunting world. (Chris Kirby, Harold Knight, Dave Owens, Dean Redbeard Munhenke) etc.

Above all, as a younger turkey hunter trying to learn the most helpful has been "The Southern Outdoorsman Podcast" Leading up to and during turkey season, these guys interview turkey guys and try to interview the older generation of turkey hunters to get their perspectives, history, tips and tricks. Alot of these interviews are video interviews on Youtube. Super helpful. They have interviewed Mike Pentecost, Dave Owens, Cuz Strickland, Bob Walker, Mark Prudhomme, etc.

They need to interview a lot of you guys on this forum lol!

I guess my age is showing... Hunting the American Wild Turkey by Dave Harbour was the first turkey book I was gifted back in the mid-1970s that really made me think harder about what I was doing.

That's what I'm talking about, bringing something fresh to the game, it is fun sitting and listening, sometimes.   I guess I could listen while on the road.

Tom Kelly has already been stated, but if you have a distance to drive to your hunting sites or work, I highly recommend the audiobooks for sale on his website.

There's something special about hearing him read his books. I will be bingeing them from now through the season.

You beat me to it, Jim.  Col. Dave was the real impetus for me getting started...and eventually addicted to...spring gobbler hunting back in the late 60's and early 70's. His books and his articles in Sports Afield each spring really stoked my passion for this thing we do. But, yeah, we are showing our age, for sure. I doubt many here on OG have even heard of Harbour. :icon_thumright:
