I would say they have  a rough idea about 48 hours and a good idea about 12-24 hours prior  -

Thanks for that, Old Gobbler. I was thinking the other day that it seemed a little quiet on the hurricane front.  Looks like Emily will bypass Florida as well.

I've been thinking bout you folks down there. The news is full of reports on Emily.

Its certainly a stressful time of year. The precautions I make for a storm take approx 48 hours and thats with alot of stuff already done. The general media makes it worse, the Weather Channel USED to be a great source for info, now they are worse than the rest.Jim Cantore is at the top of that list.Never forget when we dodged a bullet down here and with not much to talk about he said "we now have some major puddling".

Hate to say it but I have grown to like the hurricanes ,they are my main source of income as I am in the hurricane window door and shutter business. We have lost 90 percent of our business due to the housing crisis and lack or a few good hurricane scares. I don't want to wish any evil on any one by wishing for a hurricane but it sure would help pay the bills around here. And trust me I have experienced the evil as I lost everything I owned in Sept.1992 when Andrew hit me in Cutler Bay. We lived in a tent for 34 days and in a trailer until Dec 5 with a generator for power. The bad thing is that the insurance companies have been raping us all these years and when we do have a storm we will have another fight on our hands to get what they owe us. There are some good products on the market that will protect your home if it is built right in the first place ,I know mine is a bunker made of solid concrete with 15/16 glass and shutters on top of the impact windows. Do what you can to stay safe for there are going to be hurricanes every year that may or may not impact us.
