Chalk case.........

After reading Will's comment, I got to thinking....and at 3:30am this morning, I woke up with the design and plans for a small bamboo chalk case for the hunting vest. I can make it with attachments...or whatever. I cut these long enough for a whole piece of red turkey chalk, but I can cut them down shorter if needed. One end will have a permanent, not removable leather plug end cap. The open end I will make a removable leather plug that can be pulled out with a tug of the braided fishing line that secures it to the bamboo chalk case. I plan on drilling a hole in the center of the plug and installing a short section of braided fishing line that will be secured on one end by knots and adhesive; and the other end will be secured on the side wall of the bamboo via holes I drill in the side of the bamboo to attach the braided fishing line. My youngest son says the first one is his.......

I think that can be arranged. You spoke up just in time, but you are 4th in line....that 5th one I guess will be my test small bamboo chalk case. Fortunately, since I'm not cutting and fitting an end cap with a hinge, I can build them easier.

Bamboo is a difficult material to work....and it will challenge and test your patience. You have to sand through the layers on the outside of the bamboo to get to a layer that will work for what you are wanting to do. The learning curve with bamboo is many times frustrating; but when you can get something that works, it can be very nice.......

Leather covered vs paint....oh, decisions...decisions. The leather covered bamboo case I added a D-ring. I like the D-ring...it's practical. Now I've got to make the end caps for both. But first, I've got to finish a leather case for a friend.

I never worked with bamboo, but I imagine it's very similar to river cane. Besides making cane yelpers (small cane), I have made a few call cases out of the bigger stuff. I use a pocket knife to scrape off the out layers. It's still work, lol, but much easier and quicker than sanding through that hard stuff. Still need to finish sand (150 and 220), but it is much easier.

Thank you, EZ!!! I'll have to give your method a try....my method gums up all my good sandpaper...LOL!!! Regardless, my experience is that bamboo requires the most time and effort investment of any material I have ever tried to work.
