Tail Feathers

My grandson was out of school today and I figured we may see some birds being the time of year it is so off we went.  We saw two longbeards and heard another.  He was gobbling on his own at 4pm.  Boy I wish season was open!  We were out of the truck looking at tracks when one gobbled in the distance, and another Tom gobbled maybe 80 yards from us at that distant bird.  My grandson said "call him!" and I mouth called.  I know...I know.  But it was a poor attempt.
The closer Tom gobbled and was real close so we quickly slipped in the truck.  Sure enough, 30 seconds later he comes into view, 40 yards from my hood.  A big nice longbeard. He walked right out in the open and crossed a pipeline.  He walked down that pipeline and after a few minutes we backed out to minimize disturbing him.
These last two toms were in an area that hadn't held birds in a couple of years.  The land company also did a controlled burn near this.  It's very encouraging.
I hope the birds are that hot on opening day!

Sounds like your grandson is ready to pull the trigger on one? Is he hunting youth opener?

Sadly we don't have a youth season.  Barely have a turkey season here in East Texas, eastern country.  Our birds struggle to make it here, always has been that way.  But yes, he is the designated shooter on opening day.  He is in 7th grade and is very excited already.  He got a nice one a couple of years ago.

Teaching him the importance of scouting is a valuable lesson and skill that goes beyond just hunting. Good luck when the season opens!

He eats this stuff up.  We discussed the tracks, seeing the grass still pressed in, the ridges visible in fresh tracks...he has a knack for it.  We covered a few things on deer tracks too.  He's sharp on 'em.

Excellent! We need to get the next generation of East Texans bought in. I hope to pass it on to my kiddos soon.

I hope the hunting exceeds your expectations!
Did I do that?

Fly fishermen are born honest, but they get over it.

Good luck to you and your grandson but no matter what the outcome of the hunt you are making memories that last a lifetime together.
