Fly out this evening. Really appreciate all the advice given thus far. Hope to report back with success but will be happy to just hear a bird.

Hunt hard and Get er done!

Thanks kind sir. I sent you a PM as I forgot to get back to you before. Certainly going to give it 4 days of full effort

It's been tough in Oklahoma this year. There are a decent number of turkeys around, but they sure are spread out.

Great turkey habitat on public has zero sign, should be lots of turkeys. Hopefully numbers can rebound.

I went 3-4 years ago, came home empty handed as I was covered up in jakes.

Had a good time chasing but wasn't looking for a Jake.
Seems every place I tried I'd find turkey sign, find some birds, call them in and it would be a band of jakes

Take it from me fellas, I have lived in South Eastern Oklahoma just about all my life, if you can hunt them in another state, do so. The last bird I killed here in my home state was 2007. After that, the population started going down, and it hasn't come back up. Unless one has access to private land, and knows without a doubt there are some birds on it, Oklahoma is not worth it now days as much as it pains me to say.

I don't know exactly what has happened to Oklahoma's turkeys the past 10 or so years.. some have said hogs, some predator surplus or fire ants... Whatever it is, I've not personally seen much evidence of Oklahoma Dept. Of Wildlife trying to help them, it seems to alot of us, that the Dept. is only concerned about deer population now

Looking at harvest reports, been 83 birds taken off Black Kettle. There WERE definitely plenty of birds to be killed in the beginning. Like there always is. What I've saw some folks neglect to mention is that Kettle and the surrounding region is some of the most heavily pressured public lands there is. If you want a reasonable chance, you gotta get out there for the opener and hopefully already have a few pegged from scouting. Put in the work, fight the crowds, and you got a good chance to kill some the first few days.

Now days a lot of folks think it goes something like this: Turn vehicle west, pull up to hunting spot, shoot within a day a or two. Yeah, sometimes it happens like that. But with the increasing popularity of turkey hunting, especially traveling to turkey hunt, its just going to continue to get tougher. And it will become more and more important to be there for openers, especially on smaller/fragmented areas, to have the best chance.

To be honest I was pleasantly surprised with Oklahoma. It certainly wasn't polluted with birds which was evident in that we drove 1200 miles hunting the state for 5 days and didn't see a single bird in fields which I thought was strange, but when we got out and hunted we found a few to hunt every day.

I whiffed on a lob shot in James Collins on an Eastern, my buddy shot a Rio and I worked two different big toms out in BK, and we passed on a handful of jake's in OLAP and Ft. Supply. We did not see another hunter all weekend and had it not been for OKC night life (i.e. missed 2 first lights unfortunately) I feel we would have done even better.

Had it not been for the wind and heat I would say trip was almost perfect. I even came back to Pa with a nice tan. I am sure there are better states out there but I would certainly not say it is the worst turkey hutning I have ever experienced. That being said now that I know the land better it should only increase my odds next year.
