i received my mossberg ssi-1 turkey gun today and i must say it is the nicest and most well built single shot i have put my hands on besides some trap guns. it took alot of searching but i found one new still in box. it has a crisp 3.5lb trigger and is pretty solid feeling in the hand. any recomendations on choke and shell combos? i wanted to go with rifle sights from williams but it has an integral base on barrell. i have a burriss ff laying around but really wanted to install rifle sights. any thoughts or recomended modifications appreciated.

Welcome to the SSI-ONE club! I've owned one for years and agree with everything you just said. I do recommend that you "deep clean" the bore, It helps with patterns.

I especially like the integral sight base. You just never have to worry about it coming loose, no matter what you shoot.

I have a new "dot" type sight that I plan to give a try sometime this year on mine. I've put several scopes and all work well.

Turkey chokes...I think I've tried all of them at this point. Chokes in the .670 range work well as does the new Hevi-13 Turkey Choke with a .676 exit diameter. I like the "internals" of that choke more and more as I shoot it.

Lastly, even though it's chambered for 3.5" shells, I only shoot 3" shells through it as a general rule. They work very well.

thanks for the reply clark! i am looking forward to getting this girl set up for some pattern work. i am going to intall the ff2 this week, deep clean , etc..
also going to try win er #6, hevi # 6&7 and some #6 lead shot in the 3 inch platform. i have a jh .670 to try as well as mossberg factory turkeychoke. do you recomend i try pure gold , sumtoy,  one of your chokes, or is hevi choke performing the best?

The Hevi-13 shells do very well in that gun for me. I'm a fan of the #6 shot but have been shooting a good bit of the #7s whenever possible in the last few months.

I've always found the .670s to do best in the overbored Mossberg barrels but the Hevi-13 with it's .676 exit diameter does exceptionally well. I believe it has more to do with its "internals" than the e.d. however.
