Getting ready to do some patterning with TSS and a new choke. This might sound silly, but do most guys measure distance to the target from the end of their barrel or where their front foot is when shooting? How's the distance measured in competition patterning?

A half a yard will not change a thing with tss. Last time I patterned a shotgun I shot off the hood of my truck in the driveway. After I got done I ranged it out of curiosity. It was 43 yards...I still would have got him. Yardage doesn't matter, what does matter is that the gun shoots straight and consistent from shot to shot.

I was mainly wondering how they measure in the pattern competitions but there also comes a point when one more yard is over the effective limit and that's about how far the end of the barrel is from my front foot measurement.
Effective limit is set by what you are comfortable with and what your gun is capable of. Has nothing to do with competition or how your buddy's gun shoots. Shoot yours at 20-30-40-50 and see what you got.
I look for a forgiving pattern instead of a tight long range pattern, but tss seems to help with both. Forgiving pattern helps if a bird moves and patterning at further ranges than you intend to shoot will give you an idea of what will happen if you misjudge distance by 5-10 yards because no one is perfect.

I go from end of barrel myself. Seems to be the most accurate judgement.
But as it has been said, shoot your gun from various distances until you find your max range.
I personally don't like to shoot over 40. My preferred distance is 20-30, but if he hangs up, I want to know I can take him at 40.
