Title: Swing and a miss
Post by: Big Pine on March 28, 2020, 12:07:53 AM
Well I almost had it all come together this afternoon. I was set up in a thick, brushy creek bottom that I heard a turkey gobble on the limb at daybreak this morning. It was about 20 minutes to fly up time, and a turkey gobbled less than100 yards from me. He answered me every time I called and I got to hear him drum, he was just behind a big sweet gum tree with briars all around it, so I couldn't see him but he was well within gun range. He ended up walking out at 35 or so yards and I shot a sapling near about in half between us, and he ran away. I thought I was going to be sick. On the bright side, it took my mind off of all of the unknowns going on with this virus. I am an ER nurse and things are very touch and go at work right now, and trips to the woods are few and far between. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to work a gobbling bird, and I hope I'll get him next time. I hope everyone is having a safe and productive season.

Good luck when you go after him again. Also, thank you for what you do. My wife is an RN in the ED and my heart goes out to her and everyone in the medical field. Limited PPE, understaffed, and stressed to the max. Thanks again brother to you and all of your colleagues.

Hate that you didn't connect, but you had a great hunt regardless. Got to work a gobbler putting on a show, gobbling and drumming. That's what it's all about, the shot is just the anticlimax. I'm also an ER nurse, definitely understand your struggles and state of mind. Time is difficult to come by right now and any day spent in the woods is a good one at this point.
