If you own a Remington Model 700 you may want to watch the videos found here:
http://www.cnbc.com/id/39554936/
The last two stories, "Family Tragedy" and "Inventor Mike Walker" were also shown in last night's episode. Pretty scary stuff!! The inventor of the 700, Mike Walker, stated that the problem could have been fixed a long time ago at a whopping cost of 5 1/2 cents per gun!
What is it going to take to get Remington to take care of this problem??
Wow... no no. Recalling all the firearms would cost TOO much money. ::)
Thats why I ALWAYS keep the barrel pointed in a safe direction
As I've said before I saw a local gunsmith get a new 700 to fire 2 times out of 4 by just closing the bolt.
You should probably take look at Remingtons response to CNBC, check out this link and click on "Video response to CNBC"....

I agree with drum. This is some left wing publication with little or no validity. I can make any rifle do that if I modify the trigger or grossly mis-maintain it. If they are so bad and unpredictable, why is the military still stockin up on them? Remington's response is on you tube as well. I'll gladly take anyone's 700 off them if they no longer want it.
my Son Brad bought a new .270 in the 700 a few years ago. before he ever shot it i had the bolt rebuilt and the safety adjusted
Buy a Savage :smiley-char092:
The Rem 788 I have had since 1973 has NEVER mis-fired and Another fellow who has two of them has never had a problem. I saw the video about three months ago and that is scary but I trust mine so much I will do as others and always point it in a safe direction and be careful. Several instances did not portray pointing in a safe direction for starters.
I've never had a problem with mine (1972) that I bought used in 1983. That said I had a trigger job done on it because the trigger pull on it was horrendous. Most accidents can be avoided by following basic firearms safety rules.
I watched the interveiw with the gent who designed/developed the trigger sevral months back and if I remember he told Rem. they had a problem but they refused to do anything about it, I've owner Rem's. before and will probably own one at some other time but I cant pick one up and not wonder about the saftey.
If correct the compatition shoot'n crowd seem to like the Rem.s and I'm certain ther triggers have been modified, but (not that I hang whith comp. shooters) you dont hear them complain'n.
I had a 700 for years before I sold it to finance my purchase of a TC Encore. Never had any problems with it. Also, if you follow gun safety rules, such as keeping the barrel pointed in a safe direction (not AT your 9 year old), if it did go off, no one would be hurt or killed.
I blew a hole in the floorboard of my Dads brand new Dodge Powerwagon back in the mid 70's. I told him it wasn't my fault I'll have to show him this thread.

Bet you wished you had the Internet back then!!! :TooFunny:
I've had a model 700 in 300 winchester mag for over 20 years as my moose gun. I have never had an issue with it and love it. I also keep it maintained and follow basic gun handling safety.
I seen that last night. Sad they said 5 1/2 cost to much.
Total BS. Watch the Remington video, it tells the other side of the story. Come on guys, it was on CNBC!
how many of these defected guns had been tinkered with by folks trying to lighten the trigger. i think the desighn guy is covering his own butt by saying rem wouldnt fix it,i have a hard time believing rem would not stand behind their product and fix it right for the safety of their customers. :cross2:
The millions they have paid out in lawsuits tells me it's not BS. And the way I read it is that the Walker trigger could not be adjusted by folks who wanted to tinker with it to lighten it. The design guy, Walker, told them about the problem in 1946. He is 94 years old now...don't think he is too worried about covering his butt.
By Remington's conservative estimates, they said only 1% of the 2 million guns would accidently fire. That's still 20,000 guns. How many is too many??
I am a Remington owner and have always liked their products. The message everyone should get from this is to treat any firearm as if it could fire at that moment and always be aware of where the muzzle is pointing.
I have a rem 700 in 7mag and have never had a problem with it.

Is that Communist News Broadcasting Channel? :z-guntootsmiley:
The only way it can or will happen is if the trigger group has been adjusted wrong or out of sequence.
Rem. has fixed this as you can no longer adjust a trigger group on most 700's without doing some major
smithing on it.On any older 700 it would be advised to check the trigger group if the glue/plugs are missing
it needs to be re adjusted and plugged, over time on the older guns the plugs do come out and the trigger will also
get out of adjustment and this will allow the gun to possibly fire taking the safety off or raising and lowering the bolt.
A competent gunsmith with this knowledge should be the only person to work on a mod. 700 trigger group!!

I would trust NEITHER source,
especially not any message from the company that manufactured the product in question.
Stink pickle has a good point, because it a money issue they aint gonna admit to nothin, Rem. is kinda up against the wall now days and a major cash loss could be just enuff to fold them.
Not only lawsuits from indaviduals but the recall/repairs would be astronomical, and most people like a crisp trigger, me included so I wont hesitate to have the trigger worked to make it better, now thers a lotta guns be'n built with "lawyer triggers" in place so you cant tinker with'em for this very reason.
I too believe it's all about the money and law suits. Just think about all the law suits that have put some of the others out of Biz.
That news company is in bed with our Prez. and believe me their not done coming after our guns. Just like the shooting in ARZ. lets just ban 30 round magizines I guess the guy couldn't carry say 4, 10 round clips ,REALLY. There just putting their foot in the door for whats to come.
