Well I went to a new spot this morning. I bear hunt and bowhunt the farm and see birds all the time. My goal was to scout for the weekend while holding a gun. I set up and had three birds gobble 300 yards way. They were on the other side of the creek. So I got out of there and made my plan for tomorrow. I drove out to the barn yard and there was a different truck with a gun case in it and you could see his tracks going right to where I wanted to go in the morning. Every place so far this year that my buddy and I have to hunt has other hunters. Most land owners say first come first served for the spot. I know I could be the first one there in the am, but am thinking about going to a different spot and hoping no one is there as well. They are great farmers and want every turkey dead which means everyone gets to hunt.
I hunt on farmer owned land and run into the same thing. Although I have one little piece of woods that only I go to. The other day I was going to try this other woods but when I got down there, there was another truck parked there. Really sucks! Not sure if they were turkey or mushroom hunting though - sure wish the mushrooms would come up a week or so after turkey season!!!!!!!
I guess that happens all the time. Usually, the landowners that let me hunt will let almost anyone hunt, also. I try not to complain, though...just make it a race to the best spots. A couple of times, I've camped out on a spot just to know I'd get it. :D
My favorite is 'Sure, take as many as you want. To me they are feathered rats.' I stopped by this season and got the 'You don't have to ask anymore' and 'If you don't do well there, then call me and come to our other farm'. Wow!
I understand it would be a race, but I don't want the other guy to come in on me and get mad and really spoil the spot or even worse. Is there a way to ask the farmer if you could be the only one for your 5 day season?
I know where the birds went this morning and the other guy's truck was on that side. Would you try to beat him there or would you go to a new spot?
I just get up early so my truck is there first I can sleep under a tree.
The B options in to meet the other hunter and go together. I had a guy set up a stand near mine deer hunting. The thing is he didn't see my stand. We talked he was nice about it I showed him a couple of other spots to hunt we now sometimes go together.
honestly sounds like public land hunting to me. here in my part of western ky you do find a nice landowner who will let you hunt. and usually just you. but majority of farmers and landowners are only looking for people to lease thei land. and big $$$ at that. its usually the out of state doctors and stuff who lease the farms. but if i was in the situation you was i'd treat it like it was public land. get to your spot plenty early, and if hunting pressure becomes to much of a factor get away from it all and hunt way off in the farm.
Be thankful you have a place to hunt. I hunt all public land. I try to go where others can't or don't want to. In your case I'd get up earlier and be there before the hunters do.
Around my parts usually if a land owner says u can hunt then your the only one that hunts it.I am so far fortunate to hunt on 3 land owners.
