Finally got around to messing with some 2 pc strikers. Started dabbling with weight in grams, length, balance and wood combos. Sweet spot for all but the Dymondwood was 21-23 grams total. The Dymondwood liked 28g total.
These turned out pretty good and actually sound fair for my first go round. Each has a distinct sound too.
L to R
Maple top cumaru dowel
Birch top tulipwood dowel
Purpleheart top drilled out in the bell with a black locust dowel (my favorite so far)
Last is a blk walnut top with a Dymondwood dowel.
Copied the material, weight and length from a Schaffer 2 piece for the last one. Runs very good.
Much respect to guys who do this on the lathes. Y'all make it look and sound easy.
They look nice, like the two end pieces.
can also drill pilot hole in top and try running different sized dry walls screws in top or smaller screws sometimes that little bit weight difference will balance them out ,,, weight higher up on striker top

That cumaru is a fantastic striker wood!
Another thing you can do is chuck the dowels in a drill and thin them out some.
Great tip and idea JLH! Some of them do feel like "fat fingers" with no finesse. Will try that with the Wenge. That would be an easier way to drop a touch of weight too.

If you can taper it down close to 1/4" down near the tip... she'll sing!!

I played the same game in the off season the ones I liked were
Skinny redheart top desert dymondwood dowel
Padauk fat top desert dymondwood dowel
Osage fat top cocobolo dowel
Weathered maple green or desert dymondwood dowel
Laminated fat top and desert dymondwood dowel
Wenge, purple heart and Osage seemed to deaden the dymondwood too much for what I was looking for..
Honestly a two piece with the desert dymondwood dowel is one of my favorite strikers. Snakewood first, two piece dymondwood, purple heart are the top three for me.. I watched the nwtf calling competition lots of guys are using two piece strikers.
The skinny redheart top with a few smashed flat lead airgun pellets up in it after drilling out a tad sounds good on several dowels.
