Like the title says, I am in the market for my first short box. Have been using Halloran twisted sister and learning a diaphragm call but would like to add a short box as well.
So..what do you guys recommend? Would like to stay around the $80 and under mark. Wouldn't mind picking up one from a member on here. Doesn't need to be a big name, just a great call that I can learn on and won't outgrow.

Lee Smith calls are about 125.00 and he is making some really great sounding box calls. I don't think he has a long waiting list either. But now is the time to try and get one before the mad rush to the NWTF Convention then the start of turkey season
I agree w the SS boxes. Don't overlook Halloran either
Jeff White makes a killer field box. I am not sure on price, but they are around what you are looking to spend.
i vote jeffwhitecustoms. he makes a killer box at a very reasonable price. i have one now and am waiting on two more
Try a ml Lynch foolproof , the one siders are usually a little easier to learn on .

I killed a lot of birds, with hens, for many years with a Lynch world champion before I found this site and started buying and trying others. A good starter call. Quaker boy also, there right down the street from me. I can tell you also that there are some great callmakers found here on this site and are top notch, easy to deal with and pure gentleman. To many to list.....

If you could go a smidge more theres a beautiful Tim Bullock short box on the Swap board right now...that's a state of the art call in most people's books.
SSCustom short box. All of Al`s and Josh`s boxes run turkey.
In case you missed it, Al and Josh at SS calls! Haha All their calls sound great. I really like their kiwila/butternut combo.
Spring Creek, cedar
I have one that I think is great.
I agree with what everyone has mentioned all are good options.I would suggest a couple different wood combos. Walnut over butternut, Cedar, or mahogany are usually pretty solid calls from many different makers. Also black limba is a great base that you can top with many different woods for the paddle that will sound great. Have fun choosing

Billy has started selling his calls on eBay. Hustlin hen is a great box. I think he has them ready to ship.
Dan Harris, Dan's custom calls of Texarkana Texas builds a good Cost style call. He's had a table at Unicoi since Mark and Russel restarted the show. I got a mini hen and a hen box Turpin style from him this year at Unicoi. Top notch calls. He has a booth in Nashville this year stop by and try his calls if you go. Booth 2019
I would check with Joe Slayton. This is a wormychestnut/Ipe and it sounds great. (http://i64.tinypic.com/1fa42g.jpg).

Lots of excellent choices. I will add Brian Vandergrift as someone who makes a great sounding, beautiful Cost style shortbox in your price range.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I have contacted the guys at SS and they recommended a purpleheart over limba. I plan on placing my order with them this week. :gobble:
SS are good folks they will do you right!
