Fun little project this weekend......My father has a wood lathe, so I figured what the heck, I can build a trumpet, and here is the first sound clip of it. I literally finished it and walked out in the rain to make this recording with it. Excuse the kee-kee....lol....need to practice that one a bit. The trumpet is made out of some scrap white oak and has a delrin mouth piece. The internals were a complete guess, but seems to have worked out okay. It isn't a pretty trumpet, but I wasn't concerned about that. First time working on a lathe as well, I was clueless and struggled making this thing, but no injuries to report :toothy9:

Those internals will hunt.
Sounds pretty darn to me Greg, good job!
Thanks guys.....she is ugly, but somehow managed to sound like a turkey. I think I remember how I built it....Hehe
Get you a set of calipers so that you can reproduce it and the start making changes until you get to where you want it. It's all about the journey man!

Thanks Chris, fortunately I have just about every tool known to mankind, and I love to tinker. I have messed around with wood for years, so this is fun stuff to me.
Sounds good to me.
Don't know what it looks like, but I know what it sounds like, and that will call turkeys. Good job.

Sure would!!!
Here it is, be gentle, first time on a lathe for me. I have since thrown it back on the lathe and it looks completely different now. I also have very different plans for the next one, more traditional trumpet lines. I want the next one to look the part as well, will take a little more time on the exterior. I may use a brass or copper piece on the wood/delrin intersection.

No doubt sound is my number one priority, seem to have succeeded there, now I want it to look good to my eye too. This one is just not there. Interestingly enough, as I reshaped this trumpet the sound changed a bit, this reminds me of my days building guitars where everything caused tonal changes.....fun stuff!

Everything is relative when making turkey calls.

My plan is to build a couple more this weekend, I will post up some pics and sound files if possible.
I like the shape of it myself, especially near the horn.

Good to know, just goes to show everyone has a different eye for things. I am going to try another shape until until it strikes my fancy.
