Title: Polishing a Barrel

How long does it take to polish a barrel for the first time?  I assume l have to deep clean it first?

If your primary goal is to shoot more even patterns and secondarily to increase the number of hits, I would recommend that you deep clean the bore https://allaboutshooting.com/blogs/blog/98772615-deep-cleaning-a-shotgun-barrel Then take your gun too the range with big paper and at least 5-7 shells.
Number each target, and fire from a steady rest without cleaning between shots. In that way you will be able to see at what point your gun throws the best patterns, even/dense and numbers count. I suspect after that, you may not see a need for polishing but you still have that as an option.
