The boxes are mineral poplar.

I like the looks of mineral poplar and would guess hackberry for the paddle. Nice looking calls.

Don't feel bad......................... I was fairly certain it'd take a while before (IF) someone got it right. Paddle wood was going to be either serviceberry or this stuff. Apparently this stuff worked exceptionally well, so.............

In addition to ironwood, some folk call it musclewood as the bark can have a sinuous muscle like pattern to it. Dense indeed... just try knocking a trunk w a bare knuckle and you can see that it has been aptly named.

So the real question should be...what's the botanical name? Ostrya virginiana is a hop hornbeam to some people and Carpinus caroliniana is hornbeam or muscle wood to others. Common names can be confusing and change from region to region but the botanical name is the one and only true name. I'm saying this not to be a smart xss but I am very interested in types of woods used in call making. Also, my parents paid a lot of money for college education and they would be proud of my post! Lol
Anyway, Yoder....Ostrya or Carpinus?

Hah! I thought I was doing well to recognize swamp maple!
