Title: Lost my slate, sell me a new one
Post by: Bolandstrutters on May 23, 2018, 08:15:57 AM
I know this has been asked a million times, but I need some current intel on the best slate surface pots. Somewhere in the black hills I lost my favorite Halloran slate as well as a few of my favorite strikers.  I was running an gunning with a new vest and kept forgetting to zip the pockets my pot calls were in and I finally dropped it and couldn't track it down.  I mainly use a slate for real soft stuff when they are getting in tight.

Eddie Wynnes persimmon slate. It plain kills turkeys consistently.

Lonnie Marby slate, I have 3 in different woods and love them all

Lonnies slates are great. I have 2 . The only problem is you have to find one on here or go to his shop in Georgia to get one. He does not ship calls unless he has changed that up over the last year.

Well, if you need one now here is your answer.

Lots of call makers tend to make it a  friggin process to actually buy a turkey call....lists, wait times, and now not even shipping calls....lol

Get a John Sinclair red slate or green. I have both they sound great. Red is in a Osage pot the green is in a purple heart pot.

I'll sell you on one of mine since you asked. I make a walnut slate/glass (higher pitch) and a maple double slate (mellow). PM me your # and I'll send you some sound files.

John Sinclair..... Every call I get from him I am utterly amazed at the sound I get from them.. My money would go to him.

Depends what you want in a slate. If you want what I call mellower old school type calls or more of a popping type call.
I'll never get the real mellow stuff cause any decent call can call soft.
That being said I really like David Hallorans Zebrawood Slate if you can find an older laminate slate too. He never shoulda turned that call off. Mark Cornelius makes a great one and you don't hear much about it anymore but Schafer's red hen slate was really good as well, I'm not particularly a slate guy but he was selling a newer one though I forget the combo that was also one to look at

Thanks for the offers and recommendations so far.  For the most part I only use a slate surface when I've got one coming in or one that's hung up pretty close.  I set it to my side and purr and cluck without having to make hardly any movement at all.  I've got until next spring to find one!
