Title: Faulty Woodhaven Striker???
Post by: PaHunter8484 on May 06, 2018, 07:25:59 AM
Hey guy,

My Cherry Classic Crystal came with a hickory and a purpleheart striker.  The hickory is oddly beveled and is not consistent in shape 360 degrees.  The purpleheart is.  The hickory can be very tricky to get it to not skip, and it also sounds poor quite often.  This is supposed to be the one that is handpicked for this call.

The purpleheart never skips and is quite easy to use.  The bevel on this striker is much more visible and completely consistent all the way around.

I'll attach a few pictures.  Let me know your thoughts on what I should do.  Maybe contact the company?  or maybe it is completely fine?

Use sand paper and sand it like a pool stick
Until it's the way you want it

Looking at pictures, the purpleheart is more rounded on edge making it little easier, you can probably take some 120 grit sandpaper and round the edges more, that should fix you up but if you contact Mr Mike he will make it right also

I sent 2 woodhaven laminate birch strikers back before I finally talked to Mike the owner and he looked at them both and said they were faulty and not even tipped and he picked me one out that was perfect.

But...... I thought someone hand picked every striker to the call????? Why would they send a bad one?

That's a good valid question
Mass production, the strikers probably don't get
The quality control like the calls do

Sandpaper is your friend, it's just a 5/16" dowel, show that thing who's boss!   Keep the grit coarse like 150 or less and chalk it when you like the profile.  Pattern after the one you like.  Good luck!

I would just use sandpaper in the palm of my hand and turn in the same direction. I've gotten strikers before I didn't like how they played so i just "tuned" (sounds fancier then saying sanded lol) the striker myself.

Guess I'll try the sandpaper method.  Was hoping when paying $100 for a call, There'd be an easier way to get info on a replacement. So far no reply from the company. Oh well :)

I do agree if you contact the company or maker they should make you happy 100%. I think it's bad business to not reply.

That's what I'd do. Very simple fix. I do agree that paying such a high price for a production call, the striker shouldn't need to be "fixed". I'd keep calling them. Maybe you'll get a free striker :)
