Okay then, I am a member but I will try not to bring them up. I don't care for their publication much, though it it is better than it was in the early 2000's I always preferred Turkey and Turkey Hunter Myself but have had no other issues beyond that with them.

That has been around for years, can't remember the state but a lady had vanity plate with "NWTF" on them and the state was "recalling" them for the "Now"What The Fu@!", don't know how it ended up but thought it was a bit crazy... And yes she was a turkey hunter. She posted a picture with her and a gobbler by her plates showing her support of the NWTF.

There's a large group who believe the NWTF have taken credit for others work and some other things. Hopefully they explain more. Now let me get some pop corn.

On the off chance you are being serious I wanted to know if there was a reason that instead of seeing The National Wild Turkey Federation being abbreviated NWTF I had seen it done this way N"WTF" in what seems to be a derogatory way. The question has been answered.
Are you saying you have a dislike for the NWTF , or what...can you explain ? 35 year's ago we welcome NWTF for what they did in helping stock birds in our state... I have no problem with NWTF and the accomplishments with banquets , fundraisers and the youth programs... It's has helped our local chapter in raising funds for radio collar's in tracking turkey's and also in buying much needed equipment for public land food plot's and i could go on and on, with the good that NWTF has done in our state....

The NWTF has done a lot of good along the lines of turkey restoration. Not that they trapped and transplanted all those birds, but they helped by funding some and by providing volunteers to help out. Their research has been a helpful and the wild turkey reached peak numbers of restoration in part because of the NWTF's persistence and funding.
That said, what does an organization do when their primary mission has been completed?
They've turned to WITO, Handicapped Hunters and get the kids outdoors. All noble enough, but not really turkey related.
I'm hoping they fund some more research to see why the high bird numbers seem to be tumbling in so many places.

Not exactly along the same lines as discussion but I'll share this anyway since I was amused.
Last spring I stopped at a truck stop for a cup of coffee on the way to the woods. I was wearing a camo NWTF hat. The cashier was a young black girl who lit up when she checked me out and said "I really like your hat." I said thanks as I was fond of it too because it was Mossy Oak Bottomland. She then asked me if I knew what NWTF stood for. I responded as most would and told her about the NWTF. After listening to my little explanation of the NWTF, she proceeded to tell me that was not what was on my hat. She told me it stood for Negroe Women for Tomorrow Foundation. I laughed and said "No, not this hat." We both just laughed but I don't think I convinced her otherwise.

Gonna agree w this. It's a great orginazation where I'm from. Lots of mentored hunts I've been involved with. We already got notices about what's offered to the folks. I've been mentoring these hunts a long time. They've planted areas, bought items needed for the hunts. It's all what you put in. You can do nothing and complain or do something to help. Seems always guys that do nothing complain the loudest.
Anyone know the reason Keck stepped down after his salary became public? And if I remember right there were others that left about the same time, they also were being paid astronomical salary's...

I thought the $300K was excessive, as well.
I was never a huge fan of Rob's general demeanor during his NWTF tenure. Got along with him OK. But I just always thought he could have been a bit more grounded and in touch with the blue collar guy who gave a couple hours pay to join the organization. Instead the trend seemed to be to roll with and like the big corporate donors.
BUT............................ The NWTF is a HUGE organization. The general membership probably wouldn't be too happy about a guy like me who goes to work with a lunchbox and his name on his shirt running the show. ANNNNNND..................the big corporate donors ARE where the big money comes from. How many local fundraiser banquets does it take to equal one big fat check cut by X Ammunition, Y Camo or Z Timber Company ??? I do think Rob did a good job at being THE recognizable face of the NWTF.
As for why he left...........................it wasn't because his salary became public knowledge.

To the OP - you didn't do anything wrong. You are asking about history, something which some "newbies" (only a few years or less) here may not know about before responding, which is fine. Don't let others who lack historical context regarding the answer influence your decision to ask further questions. Its all good.
Another angle was this: a dozen or more years ago many of us here now had a terrific forum on the NWTF to talk turkey hunting - super busy site. Then, things changed at the NWTF, and the forum was dissolved. Many of us then went elsewhere on the internet where we were welcome. Fast forward a bunch of years, here we still are, but those experiences way back then contributed to shifting opinions and views.

I will keep asking questions about things I may not know and especially calls, I really like those trumpet calls and had always thought that it was just another name for a wing bone call. I really enjoy history and the history of turkey hunting and calls used mostly in years gone by really intrigue me so when I see something new to me I just have to ask.

@Guesswho and paboxcall I would very much like to though I fear it may not be in the budget this year, my GF and I have a van that is on it's last legs it seems, and we are hoping it can make it through til next winter but I don't think it will so all spare money is mostly going to the get a new vehicle fund. Turkey calls possess exactly the correct pitch to infuriate my wife in less than 20 seconds, almost like flipping a switch. Excessive volume just speeds the process.
I met a woman at Tikal, in Guatemala in the late 1980s from Costa Rica named Maria Jose who was studying Oscillated Turkeys working towards her Doctorate. A large portion of her research was being funded by the NWTF. Their reach goes beyond our borders and really does help the wild turkey. I'm definitely not a fan of Turkey Country magazine, nor over-paying corporate officers, but I appreciate their accomplishments and achievements.

My GF is going to be the same way I fear, at least the dog likes my calling.
Concerning the NWTF, I guess you have to sometimes take the good with the bad. Our society is full of overpaid "Fat Cats" in all walks of life & occupations. Does that mean you quit supporting that organization? That is up to the individual and is really no one else's business IMO. I am sure the NWTF has accomplished all sorts of good for the Wild Turkey.

I agree, Sir-diealot post what ever you want how ever often you want. Maybe the question was dumb to Massey, but it wasn't to you so ask. If someone doesn't get or like the post it makes me wonder why they took the time to respond. One word...drama. some people would rather start drama then help others. I've also seen other posts I didn't like before so I just skip over them, it's that easy. I would never discourage a new member. I say ask away, post several times a day, this is as much your forum as anyone else's (besides Shannon it's his more lol). This is a great forum but like all public forums it also has a few less desirable members who would rather argue than contribute to discussions. Most members here are great help and great discussion.

Thanks southern_leo for the kind words (by the way is the leo your name or sign, I know some people are into the later like my GF that is why I ask)
I am 48 now and have developed a thick skin, not so much when I was younger so nobody is going to get me discouraged. I really like it here.
Just so everybody know's Greg Massey did contact me in a PM and we are good now, just a bit of a misunderstanding.
