I'm going to order a Vortex Venom for my 870 20 gauge. I'll going to get the receiver drilled and tapped. What base/mount do i need for the venom? Will the 336 base work?
yes but i like the sumtoy mount.
you just need to get your base before your get it drilled and tapped.
i am waiting on my sumtoy mount to get here for my remington 870 20 gauge compact i am building and then i am going to have it drilled and tapped and mount my sumtoy mount and my ff3 to it and a venom will work same way.

Where should it be mounted? Front, middle, or rear of receiver?

I'm doing as far back on the receiver as possible
Rear of receiver get your Mount first then take Mount and 648 acres to ur gunsmith and have him drill and tap it and install it at rear receiver for you shouldn't cost more then 40.00 to do that.
