Who do y'all think wins it this year in Nashville?
No idea who all is entered but I've seen and heard a few pots from a guy that is entering a few of his. He has recently become pretty darn popular on here and in general. Two in particular that are absolutely lights out. One being an aluminum and one a crystal and those aren't even the surfaces he's been getting the notoriety for....After the show is over I'll come back to this thread and let you know who it is and what the pots are! Lol. Hate to name drop when he's trying to keep the stuff a little "behind closed doors".
Kimmy Hanks is gonna get a three-peat :goofball: :goofball: :goofball: :goofball:
All jokes aside.... I feel like I've got a good idea of who's gonna win. We'll all just have to wait and see.
Nothing against the call makers, but hopefully its someone that can fill customers orders so we can purchase the calls. Maybe that's a bit selfish?

Just my opinion, but that is a bit selfish. While it would be nice if some call makers could fill as many orders as others, but they simply can't. Those guys aren't people that can take on call making full time. It's not that they wouldn't sell the calls or make enough money, it's that they plain don't want to do it fill time, it would suck all of the enjoyment out of it, it would then become "work". You must also factor in these people have families too, and stuff like new babies for a lot of the younger guys. Just because they can't fill as many orders, but make the "best" call, there is no reason they don't deserve the recognition and awards that are out there.
I also agree with TJ. Paul not winning one yet is like the equivalent of it taking, what was it 25 years?, for Leonard DiCaprio to win an Oscar. Paul makes an outstanding caller and absolutely deserves it just as much as anybody...

Perfect analogy, couldn't have said it better myself.
It was a selfish comment after thinking about it. I understand most call makers have a regular full time job. I don't see how David Halloran fills all his orders and keeps a construction business going. I have a family and cant imagine juggling it all. I didn't realize Paul hasn't won the DD award. He absolutely deserves it as much as anyone else.
Carry on...

I would agree with Paul Platz. After playing alot of calls on the call makers table the last few years Pauls calls impressed me the most.
Found a list posted by Rebelyell:
2002 Bill Zearing Cody Calls
2003 Bruce Wurth American Friction Calls
2004 Harry Blodgett
2005 Larry Bean
2006 Gary Anderson Radical Bubinga slate
2007 Pat Strawser
2008 Pat Strawser
2009 Tim Clayton
2010 David Halloran Crystal Mistress
2011 Lonzo Waterfall Bubinga glass
2012 Lonzo BE maple slate
2013 Gary Anderson Canarywood glass
2014 Clint Corder Osage glass
2015 Clint Corder Macacauba aluminum
2016 Kimmy Hanks Zebrawood glass
I couldn't imagine choosing 1 when there are so many great call makers. Paul should be on there though.

Paul deserves it. He makes a awsome pot. I am going on 3 years waiting. I have a couple of special ones coming when my name comes up.
I'll agree with everyone on Platz. He certainly deserves one. Y'all watch out for Riley Corder. I wouldn't be shocked to see her make a run at it
Anyone know about how many calls get entered and how they actually judge them?

I know Hank's had 2 or 3 pro staff members judging last year
Yeah I saw that debacle on another forum. I don't think prostaff members of participating call makers should be able to judge the division their company is competing in. It would be difficult not to have a degree of biased.

doesnt matter, from what I gather its more of a popularity contest as to who wins. NOT the best pot. mostly political, Mike
Well said mspaci that's the truth

I like DD Adams calls, if they win you can bet it'll be pure turkey should the consumer go get one.
Halloran
Corder
Lonzo
DayBreak
Hanks
A few I have and play, a few have earned a spot in my vest a few have earned backups on the shelf should I misplace one.
Its pretty easy to win when the judges are on your pro staff. Paul got robbed last year. And that is coming from a callmaker that was competing against him!

We are our own worst enemies. As soon as someone posts the next greatest best call ever,
200 plus people get in line for one,and then wonder why the call wait went from 4 weeks (aka Paul Platz) to 2 years plus.I'm just using Paul as an example, but a true one.
But I have watched the circus go round and round, with other callmakers as well.
its a shame its a flawed system but judging turkey calls is going to be a very subjective opinionated business once you add pro-staff and friendships into the equation you are bound to get a practically irrelevant result.

I get that some people are upset because someone else didn't win, but coming from someone with a young daughter it is cool the young lady won. I would hate to judge this contest, I'd bet there are a ton of awesome calls there. I can't imagine picking a favorite

Congrats to Riley!!!
I've never been to the convention, sorry for the stupid question, but do the judges run the call for that division or does the call maker, or someone they choose?
l'm not going to lose sleep over who should have won it. I'm not affiliated with any of them. There's one call maker that I know in my home state, and he didn't compete. I'm sure there are some salty guys though.
The judges run the calls. Unfortunately in some categories the judges cannot run the call they are judging. Use to be a real sore spot for me but life is too short to get caught up in it.
I'm sure this idea has been thrown around at some point, ever proposed to have calls in the competition that do not have a call makers name on it?

I made some recommendation a few years to the NWTF about how I thought the judging should be done. Needless to say I did not get very far. I still think the callmakers should run their own call behind a curtain. No names or faces. Heck, I have told Tim Bullock he would easily win with the way he can run a call. He normally places but very seldom at the top.
I heard Hanks made the finals for tomorrow, not sure what that means but they were talking about it at the hanks table today

Turkeys are the true judges of turkey calls. There are so many good calls and call makers now a days to narrow it down to one that is "the best" by humans who by nature are going to be subjective to what they like out of a call or who they know and don't know just doesn't seem like the best way to label "the best"
Wondering why David Halloran is not entering calls anymore?

Regardless of how the judging is done controversy will follow....
3 of her calls for sale on ebay
Wins from the calling (playing) contest should take the calls behind a curtain for judges.
