Title: New Federal TSS
Post by: BottomLand54 on January 26, 2018, 11:05:58 AM
Anyone know where a man can get some 20 gauge and 12 gauge of these yet?

Are they waiting till after the shot show?

Are they waiting till after Nashville?

I don't want to know about places online that  say there on backorder, or expected anytime.

Does anyone have any in stock ready to ship or pickup?

Thanks.

Do not think they will be officially released until after Nashville, probably can buy them there through.

allaboutshooting on the forum was one who got these shells from Federal and did testing for them.. he did a report on the forum about the performance of these new shells...

Yeah Greg I seen that review that Clark did, but I want to see shells perform that have been mass produced boxed up and bought at a retailer. If I were going to be introducing a product I would always ship the best I could absolutely make to the one doing the review, if that makes sense at all.

I was wandering if anyone anywhere has went to a store or purchased some online and has shot any, also where they found them in-stock?

From a sales standpoint I would not want to introduce something a month or even 2 months before turkey season opened in some states. I would want to have that ammunition available for my customers to buy so they could begin shooting it out of their own fire are and having it dialed in for their own states hunting season.

This is just my .02

I would agree but it looks like their shells will be cheaper than Apex or Nitro. Add to that the fact they will be for sale everywhere including places like Cabelas and BassPro when coupons and gift cards are available and they will not have any trouble selling them.

Cabelas said backordered or either ships is 4-8 weeks lol so there selling something they don't actually have right now.

It's funny you say that because I have a cabelas gift card from Christmas I am waiting to use on them lol just I don't want to buy something that's backordered or ships in a couple weeks lol, I want to know they have them and are shipping them.

4-5 weeks would be 1 to 2 weeks after the NWTF show. Probably a safe bet everyone will be selling them around that time. I've not seen them anywhere in stock yet.

Been loading my own for the past 3 years. It is easy to do and can be enjoyable. Really like the bang flop that tss produces and something about seeing awesome patterns and dead birds you load yourself. Sorry , was not trying to hijack the thread.

3.5 and even 3in 12ga TSS loads are honestly way over kill in #9s. You will be talking 400+ pellet counts in a 10in circle at 40 yards. Pretty much ruin your turkey meat if shot in the chest. I just started the process of loading my own and many people have been telling me that #8 2ounce loads may even produce too crazy of a pattern. This is why many people drop down to 20, 28, and 410 gauge shotguns if using TSS. So from what little I know, 3.5in TSS is basically a big waste of money.

I completely agree with you. But I also know there are a lot of hunters out there that will always take "bigger and better" if given the chance.

If they made a 5in 12GA shell ...they would buy.

definite truth to that such as people using 300winmag when the furthest shot they have on a deer is inside 200 yards. Completely unnecessary.

was browsing around at my LGS today and I asked him about the tss, he told me he tried to order some from Federal and they told him they were not releasing them until august, September..... don't know if there is any thing to it, but that's what the owner of the store told me, here in Ms.

Look at how fast you are learning! I'm into counting holes and throwing insane patterns so it's no waste of money to me. A heavy gun and a shell that kicks like a small donkey just does it for me. Of the birds I've killed with 2.5oz of #9s I've yet to have an issue with pellet in the breast. For most people here though a .410 with TSS #10s is all they would need. Loading up some 20 gauge 2.75" #10s for my son tomorrow.

On the pellets in the birds concern, I killed 7 gobblers last year all under 35 yards, I think I found three pellets while cleaning all those birds, I was shooting 9.5 out of a 20 guage.

Those 3 pellets are back in the mix and will find there way to another round!

Are you saying thee others passed through the animal?

I know last year I shot a bird a bit farther then I would have liked and got allot of magma blend in the breast that was a pain to pick out about had to cut it open to get it and the feathers out.

It's alright.  I think the Feds are what 1 1/4oz?

Here's one of my hand loads.  1 5/8oz of #9s thru a buddy's 21" barrel 20ga @ 40 yards:

How do these patterns look at 15 steps?  Just curious on the size of the pattern. I have been looking for some close shots with TSS and have not seen any.  Just curious. I am so well stocked now on ammo, barring a catastrophe to gun or shells, I have at least 15 years worth for me and daughter (unless I hit the lottery and start hunting a Grand Slam every year).

Yes. There is not much difference in the 3. You are not trying to overcome a wad like the old FCW. The shot is heavy so it will pretty much hold together. The two chokes I would recommend to anyone shooting TSS in a 20 ga is a Carlson .575 or Trulock .585. If you are shooting a Remington then I would try the RSF.

In 12 ga I would go .670 or higher. A bunch of these companies are in partnership with a choke manufacturer and so they recommend their choke. Never understood why anyone tries to push a 2.25 oz load through a .650 or .660.

TIGHT!  I hunt a lot of wide open wheat fields and mesquite flats here in TX, OK, and KS.  I can see the birds coming from a long ways generally.  I just don't let them get close.  Plus by the time I've watched them come for so far I can hardly stand it any more any way.  This is not a set up I'd use in the creek/river bottoms chasing Easterns in MS or a combo I'd give a kid.  I'd start with a mod choke in those situations and adjust accordingly after I patterned the gun.

If I do let a bird get in close on me with my setup, I aim at the base of the neck.  It ain't pretty if he's 20 yards and in!

FYI, the above pattern was with a Remington Super Full lead only choke with the hand loads.  The Remington Super Full Hevi-shot choke throws a more open pattern or as suggested I'd try a Trulock Full Choke.

Good to know. I have only ever tried the RSF that is hevi approved. Do you know if their constriction is different between them?  I think a 400 pattern from any 20 ga with any choke is an anomaly. That shot lights out!

Don't quote me on this.   I think the lead only is .562, and the Hevi approved is more open.

We've had two of the 21" barrel 870s with the "lead-only" chokes shoot over 400 in the 10 @ 40 yards.  Both barrels were deep cleaned and polished to mirror finish.

Guys I am going to shoot some apex 9s out of a 562.5 I will see what it does when I get too do it. I want to continue read and see patterns out of the federal stuff. What I've seen so far I am really liking. And it is cheaper.

I think the hevi approved RSF is .570 or .575, think .570.  Never polished the barrel on the ones I have shot so that makes sense.  Is your load the Big 20 XL with the VP92 wads?  That is what I shoot in my 500 with the Carlson 575 and I average around 325 at 40 yards.

To the poster above, be careful with the Apex ammo.  I have a friend that got a wad stuck in the barrel and shot hardly made it 15ft from end of barrel.  Sounded like a low charged load to me, but Apex told him it was a bad batch of powder.  He asked them if they were going to issue a recall and let their customers know.  Their answer was no as they don't lot/batch number their loads.

I think the hevi RSF is .570 as well.  Yes, the handload above was Big 20XL with the VP92 wad.

You fellows going to nwtf convention tell us how much federal tss they have.

Federal Sold out of 20 gauge TSS very quick. The Apex booth was a goat roping. I got to it first, big line, they forgot their tax stamps. Had to wait 2 hours while they got tax stamps, then came back and got in line. They were so disorganized they had multiple lines going and everybody confused. Myslef and many others Ended up getting ticked off at how they were running it and left. I left to take my business to Federal. I did check back with Apex later and they had sold out of 20 gauge. Those guys just were not prepared at all for this convention.

I got my apex and my federal ain't arrived lol.
I got new guns with New chokes and I am a kid anxious for Christmas Day (a day off Work with 60 degree sunny no wind day)

I don't count holes but Lord willing if I don't get excited and forget to take pictures I will post pictures once I get red dots sighted in. I am waiting on my sumtoy ff3 Mount and sumtoy .562 choke from William for my new compact 870 20 gauge and I am Going to take it to get it drilled and tapped for sumtoy Mount and I want to get it set up. I am planning on primarily using my Franchi Affinity 3 20 gauge and this Remington. My sbe2 is brand new and is a 25th anniversary and I already have it set up. I have had such good patterns with sumtoy chokes in the past that I hope I do out of all 3 of these new guns. I did not order any tss from federal for my 12 gauge but I did order some 9s tss 3inch from apex. I like 3 inch magna blends for my 12 gauges.

I hope to get some good patterns and pictures i shoot my guns off a shooting stick sitting down I do not put them I a lead sled due to stress on the Gun.

Do not think they will be officially released until after Nashville, probably can buy them there through.
The Federal stuff went very fast.  They also limited customers to 2 boxes.
Apex had more and would sell you about any amount but was much more expensive.

Looks good, BottomLand! It is crazy what a 20 gauge can do now. I'm glad to know that once I am tired of the recoil of a 12 gauge, I can spend more per shot, and get similar results!
